Fear of dentist. Need advice.

Topic started on 1-10-2004 @ 12:01 PM by pennyforyourthoughts

I'm 21 and I sat on the dentist seat for the first time today.

The reason is I have dentist phobia. My pschology was messed up for the whole month.
When I woke up today my whole body was shaking. I womited. I laid in the bed until the time of the appointment. I don't know how I felt on the way to the dentist. I sat to the chair.

Some of you already know about my wisdom teeth aches. (I tell it to every buddy)

The dentist said I have 2 cavities and all my wisdom teeth had to be taken out.

I told him about my phobia. He gave the classic adult answer "look at me, am I so scary?"

He said he could find an anestetics expert from the hospital and the expert could give me something during the operation. But I won't be out and will hear what he says, and I will not remember anything in the end.

He said he'll take the upper and lower left wisdom teeth at once and could fix the cavities in the same session.

I just wanted to hear your thoughts. Did u have such experiences with this sort of anesthetics? I don't want to hear any ugly scary stories or please respect my condition.

thnx.

Find something to take your mind off of the dentist. For example I just think of video game strategies. Try something like meditation, it works like a charm. I don't like dentists either. Its nothing personal its just I get nervous around anybody with a medical degree. But the key to surviving a dentist is think of it as something else and let your mind wander, or concetrate on something else.

It's not that bad. I had four wisdom teeth removed without anesthetics, no gas, nothign but a bit of freezing. Don't worry, you'll eb fine.

Same fear here!

I skipped the dentist for TOO long, and It costs a LOT more later, if you put it off.

Just had my Wisdoms removed as well..I feel SO much better..The bacteria load that your teeth carry can do a lot more damage than you think..
It's like having an infection that won't go away..They will also jump you your other teeth and start dissolving those as well.

It is now thought, that
this same bacteria, can take up residence around your heart, and cause problems MUCH worse..

The Phobia, as much as it bugs you, is a lot worse than just getting the work done. Really! It's in your head, as are your teeth. The dentist can pull your teeth, but only YOU can remove the phobia..

Just think how much better you'll feel, no more headaches, toothaches.
Slurpees, coffee, whatever you like, won't bother you anymore!

Call around, if you have options to go to other dentists. Some are much better at dealing with your phobia..They will talk to you about it.

Get the gas!...they will numb your mouth, but, for me, the nitrous oxide made it seem like it was someone elses mouth they were working on..

And, last but not least...GOOD LUCK!

U2U me, if you have any other Q's!

do whatever you can to overcome your fear of the dentist, because not taking care of your teeth is alot scarier than having the dentist work on the problem now.

Once you have teeth problems, eating, sleeping and just functioning can become a nightmare. try taking a friend along, someone to keep you assured you are fine. You may also want to try looking at pictures of what can happen if you don't go to the dentist, it might motivate you into a better state of mind for your next visit.

btw, your dentist sounds really nice being that he is offering to do all the work in the minimum amount of visits and giving you the choice of anesthesia. My 6 year old just had $1000 worth of work done on his mouth and he didn't even cry, he was scared of the needle of course but he didn't even know when the work started, so get the anesthesia or gas whichever you prefer and get your teeth fixed.

My wife had all 4 of her wisdom teeth pulled at the same time. You won't rember a thing about it. I went out and got a hamburger for her afterwords, and she doesn't remember eating it, even though she seemed to be acting normal to me. It was funny.

Rrequest having music. Years ago I had to get these two teeth pulled since, the roots were too long and it would take too long for them to come out. I was nervous and he gave me headphones and I put on some music. I just focused on the music and sang in my head, and it worked.

When I was 13, some mindless gob#e dropped a probe. It hit my throat and initiated the 'gag reflex'. The dentist then gave me a bollocking for almost puking and of course I couldn't reply because my mouth was numb because of the injection.

So from that point on I was scared
-less of going to the dentist.

Then in 2000, I ended up in hospital and was given 20 or so injections.
After that, going to the dentist was a walk in the park.

Actually, the injections didnt hurt at all. The previous fear was all in my mind.

Thanks everyone for sharing your thoughts.
The guy checked my x-ray today. Seems like I have a few more cavities on the left side. He arranged the anest. expert and a dental surgeon.
Next friday they'll give me anesthetics from my hand and they'll operate on my left jaw to take out my left wisdom teeth and fix my left cavities. and they'll take out the stitches the other week. He told me not to be scared coz each expert will have his own tools. He said he'll give me antibiotics and painkillers for after the operation.

I'll take a close friend with me.
I'll take my mp3 player with me in case they agree on the music thing.

With luck It'll all be over in the next 4 weeks. I dunno what to do about school and grades and stuff.

The operation was yesterday. didn't feel anything in the bottom and the cavity I felt a little when surgeon was pulling the upper wisdom tooth. They gave me the teeth they look like small scimitars!

1st is over, others will be easier I guess

My upper teeth wont fit on the new filling of the cavity so my jaw doesnt close as it used to.

you all need a dentist like mine - his name is rick and all he does is tell me jokes whilst carries out any work which does wonders for your nerves - too many dentists seem emotionless and this freaks alot of folks out even more

Oh, I feel your pain literally. I have terrible teeth and its genetic. I'm obsessed with taking care of them because as a teenager, I had such problems with extractions. I always feared the dentists as a young pre-teen because it would hurt no matter how much novacaine they injected. Then a few years ago, I had to have another one extracted and because I worked at a major university, I went to their dental college. It was there I discovered that I have a rare condition of a second nerve running along the bottom of my jawbone. A special injection called a Poages Injection is needed to deaden this nerve. Once that was done, a trip to the dentist is a walk in the park now.
