Hi guys,

I'm located in Sofia, Bulgaria and we just experienced quite the earthquake.

My flat is on the first floor and everything was shaking like hell so I guess it must have been a pretty big one!

I'm checking the USGS for data and will update the OP immediately!

p.s. what bothers me is it happened right after the EQ in Italy

Checked the USGS (I am not an EQ geek and can't seem to find my way through the website easily but...) and the magnitude shown there is 5.8! earthquake.usgs.gov...

Seems to be fairly close to the surface, which generally means a lot more shaking.

Thanks for the link! USGS is updated - 5.8!

And seeing that they felt it in Greece... it sure was a scary thing to experience (haven't had one that big since I was a child). I'll be checking for info in the local media to see whether there is any serious damage and will update as soon as I stumble upon something!

Thanks for the good words guys! I hope no one got hurt from this one and I hope there won't be anymore soon.

Hope you are alright, keep us updated and keep safe.

Sofia. A strong earthquake was felt in Sofia about 3.00 hours tonight. It shook people in their beds and forced many of them panic to leave buildings. Duty seismologists reported that the quake was centered between Sofia and Pernik and has a magnitude between 5 and 5.8 on the Richter scale.
Swaying on earth lasted nearly 10 seconds. A few minutes later and had felt a slight aftershocks.

Over the weekend earthquake of 6 on the Richter scale shook and northern Italy. The disaster killed six people.

Expect more!

www.standartnews.com...

Strong earthquake felt in Sofia was exactly 3:00 in the morning. 4 minutes later followed by the second quake.

The quake was magnitude 5.6 on the Richter scale. The depth is only 0.6 km. According to the National Centre of Seismology epicenter in Radomir.

Other sources indicate earthquake between Sofia and Pernik.

The second quake was 4.7 on the Richter scale and was at a depth of 15.7 km.

2 more quakes of magnitude 2 and 2.5 were recorded in the next 20 minutes.

Right now a fifth earthquake. It was 2.8 on the Richter scale and is in Pernik district Whitewater, just north of the former.

Wow can you provide a link to that?! 22?!?!!? We felt one aftershock after the original and it was pretty hard, too, but we felt none of the previous ones...

Also 2-3 hours ago my migraine called and it has been doing that for the past 3 days on a daily basis...

We felt a second aftershock I think... It was quite light so I hope that it's going away.

I hope some of the EQ masterminds (PuterMan where are you?!) on ATS will chime in and share their thoughts and analysis.

Oh man! I'm in Sofia too, that was f****** scary.. definitely don't want to feel a stronger one if that was a 5.7-8..

The ground was shaking like crazy, the wardrobe doors opened, the chandelier was swingiing.. I immediately ran to the front door, because this is a very old house and I didn't want to experiment with it's structural endurance, haha.

Glad it's over! Hope there aren't others coming soon, that was the first time I was scared by an earthquake.

Hey mate, glad you're OK and I hope none big ones follow!

And yeah, our first thoughts here were "If that's a 5.8 imagine what the Japanese people went through"... That is, simply put - horror!

First - I prefer the doom and gloom crap away from this thread.

Second - I'm expecting a large 8.9 EQ in the UK if you get what I mean...

Third - I hope and I'm 99% sure that you're wrong.

i must stress 'expecting', not 'predicting'. my hunch is that this alignment;

might be the culprit, IF these kind of alignments have an influence on plate tectonics, which they may, or may not. i don't know if this is the case, but i don't discount the possibility. or the possibility that i am on the wrong track completely.

Sorry if I came across as a jerk with my reply - I'm just a strong opponent of the doom and gloom we see everyday on here.

I certainly hope you are on the wrong path with your expectations and that this alignment doesn't affect Earth's tectonic plates...

Just felt another stronger aftershock!

We're going outside and I'll leave it up to you guys. Just a note - I saw two more EQs happened 30 minutes ago with a different epicenter (one was about 60 kms away from here, the other - around 100) - would be great if someone could say if they are aftershocks or other EQs...
