Turkey's "Anatolian News Agency" quotes a senior Cypriot source as saying that Israel plans to send 20,000 soldiers to the Greek part of the island to protect its energy sources in the area. The report adds that at least 30,000 Israeli workers and their families will move to Limassol to work on planned joint Israeli-Cypriot projects.
On February 16, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu met Cyprus Prime Minister Dimitris Christofias to discuss matters of joint interest to the two countries in the region.

I understand that Israel wants to protect their interests, but why are they doing this now. Do they know something that the rest of us do not? I will be watching this carefully to see what transpires in the next few months. Maybe the SHTF and they will need the troops their to protect their energy interests.

Israel is denying these claims. I added links below for the articles that contain Israel's denial. I guess we will see what happens.

Anatolian News Agency home page (in English) - nowt there 'bout Israel laddie (nor anywhere on the 1st 5 pages of headlines that I can see)

Its more of an symbolic act, or maybe a way to exercise deployments in a safe area. It aint like cyprus is gonna be attacked, unless you count demonstrators. Maybe there are plans on the table to get Israel more involved in Nato, such as deploying troops to Afghanistan in the future.

With all the gear they took and the fact they cant fund Israel on their own, at least not as the country it is right now, they dont have much of a choice if pressed into making troops available.

20000 soldiers? This is nuts. All Israeli army (active personal) is about 180000 people. Including cooks and clerks. Including all branches of military.
So i' say that while the fact of Israeli military and civilian (30000 though? Who is going to pay for all of that while local workforce is cheaper, just as skilled and does not to bring families across the sea) presence is very possible, it will be hundreds of individuals max,not almost 1 percent of total population of the country.

Only from local press ,that uses Turkish media as a source.
Numbers deployed are a certain lie. IDF having (much) less troops on Gaza border then in Cyprus is pretty funny.
And government sending 30000 Israelis to work abroad sounds insane. For local massive construction projects governemnt usually employs foreign workers due to costs.
But it can be:
Some agreement only in case of an armed conflict between Cyprus and Turkey.
Small team of engineers and experts with small military escort - maybe a couple of hundreds,top.
Or complete lie by Turkish Sorcha Faal.

It is a possibility. In February, Benjamin Netanyahu flew to Cyprus to put his signature on a defense agreement. As Turkey is a common antagonist, Cyprus and Israel have a lot in common. But as far as I know, the agreement does not mention ground support. Israeli air and naval support only are included.

2. Israel would not give up 20,000 troops; that's a massive exaggeration. It's more like they are sending their own security detail to protect the Israeli workers!

I don't see the rationale for Israel thumbing Turkey's eye with Cyprus. For the most part, Turkey and Israel pretty much were almost allies till the last decade or so. I can't see it in Israel's best interest to further strain relations with Turkey, especially given that Turkish troops may very well be on the border of Israel if Turkey takes the role of "peacekeeping force" in Syria. It's logical that Turkey take the lead on any action with Syria.

It is true that Turkey and Israel were once allies. But now they are mortal antagonists. 2009 was the year that the relationship ruptured. A Turkish vessel was headed toward Gaza to deliver food and medical supplies to the beseiged Palestinians. The vessel was boarded by Israeli soldiers. Nine Turkish civilians were killed. Since then, the rhetoric between the two countries has been hostile.

Yes I am aware of that. I wouldn't call them "mortal" foes. The Turkish Military and the Turkish Government are two different beasts. I would contend that the Turkish Military and the Israeli Military have a much better relationship then their respective governments do.
