UK MSM is controlled, but they do allow a fair amount to get through, at least they air both sides of an argument.

Following video shows some of the police clashes and the views of the protestors and veterans talking about why they're there.

Chicago police, who have largely pursued a low-key strategy towards protesters, were not prepared to allow demonstrators closer to the Nato summit, and attempted to force back the crowd.

In the ensuing melee, police used baton strikes to push back protesters, with several people taken away bleeding from injuries. There was also violence towards police, with a few members of the crowd tossing plastic bottles and sticks from protest signs towards officers.

Occupy Chicago condemned the violence as "unprecedented brutality". Spokeswoman Rachael Perrotta said she had "spent the afternoon driving injured protesters from the demonstration to the Chicago action medical wellness centre".

"The back seat of my car is covered in blood," she added.

There followed a standoff between police and protesters at the intersection of Michigan Ave and Cermak, which ended more than two hours after the march's scheduled finish time of 4pm.

With protesters seemingly happy to remain in the street at the cross-section, Chicago police at one point used a long-range acoustic device (LRAD) to convey the message that protesters refusing to leave the scene could be subject to "deterrent noise".

Jounalists at the NATO summit are updating their blogs as events occur-

So there isn't a complete MSM blackout, certainly being reported in the UK, and the video from the first link let's the people protesting have their say and shows some of the police using force. The guardian.co.uk also links to many of the Ustream live streams.

CNN also showed some of the police violence from yesterday-

So, there is a media blackout but some stuff does get through- that video is quite explicit in showing how the police will use excessive force if anyone gets in their way.

Make up your mind! Is it controlled, or not. It does not seem to be controlled if it's (er) not acting like it's controlled.

Is there a media blackout - or not. You cannot have it both ways. Maybe, just maybe the lack of footage of police brutality, mass vandalism, destruction, mass arrests and beatings, riots, blood, French taunting et al, means that it actually is not happening.

For the record, I have no problems receiving stuff about the NATO Chicago shindig. It’s on the BBC, in the papers and even (shock horror) on some US sources like CNN.

What I'm saying is people are moaning that nothing is getting onto the MSM, where the video clips presented quite clearly show police brutality and the reasons why they are protesting.

The media is still controlled, but the bottomline is that stuff gets through, as evidenced by the videos posted here. It is not a complete blackout where they flat out ignore the protests taking place, CNN even showed multiple police officers beating up a person with their clubs. The CNN guy even said 'does anyone deserve this?'

How can it be a media blackout when its on CNN and The Guardian?
I don't agree with the 'fact' people claim all the media is controlled by the same person, the Murdoch empire yes, is heavily influencial towards politicians and what not, and yes that is controlled, but not everything is owned by the Murdoch's, there are other media sources owned by others.

BBC News, for an example, tends to be a very reliable source that has reports on most things, from a non-biased base, and is publicaly owned.

Not all media is controlled by the same people, but yes alot, but not all.
