Some years ago it was announced that members of the dutch government were to have a significant pay raise. The main argument was that with the salaries as they were the best minds would not be interested to work for the government.

Utter BS... I think. In my opinion such a policy and way of thinking will contribute to corruption within governments. It will attract people interested in money and not as much people intersted to do some sincere good.

Of course these people can earn good money... but only if they perform adequate. That is how politicians should be paid... how do they perform, what do they contribute....how much initiative to they take to solve. Of course this would be a complex rating sysytem... some departments are easier than others... but there are ways to figure out such a sytem.

Where does this craving for power, money..stuff, status.... come from anyway? Is it a gene thing and programmed into our nature to keep the balance of the species? You know....kill tens of millions from time to time in order to keep the population down?

Is it an universal trade or are the human species the only ones in the universe "blessed" with these negative properties?

Somebody wants to rule the group. The group wants to dominate territory.

We dress it up. We bind it in rules and convention.

In the end? Still monkeys.
