And proximity to a white dwarf star. The original Mjolnir was "forged in the heart of a dying star" which is why it is so heavy, powerful, and radioactive.

Thors hammer was not radioactive. It was a cover up deployed by S.H.E.L.D. They were saying it was a sattelite that was radioactive. A pretty sad cover up from an agency that started the avengers team.
