I agree with Katharos, I am already living on around $700 a month, and doing fine. Although I don't desire material things, either. I am going to be
moving soon, and my expenses will be something like the following:
Rent / Internet / Utilities: $300
Gas: $100
Food: $200
Extra $$$: $100
I will own a car, although it is true that my parents are going to be paying for the insurance as well as my cell phone bill. I am going to be living
with one of my friends from college, who is buying a house, and helping him pay off his mortgage.
The $700 a month is going to not be including the money I happen to make off my business, if any. I might also make money with my band.
One thing that I have been doing all my life is collecting things. A lot of these things, like video games, books, anime and television series will
stay in my life forever and provide endless hours of entertainment without needing to pay for it again. I have also collected the necessary equipment
for a rock band over the years - like a mini studio, PA system, guitars, etc.
This long-term view of things really helps lower costs in the long run.
In conclusion, you could live like a king on $2000 a month. Just don't buy into American materialist culture, and you'll be a lot better off, hang out
with some poor artists or something to get perspective.
