Here's an idea most people probably don't consider. Maybe it's time to start saving money to move out of the city into the country where there are plenty of jobs that don't require flipping burgers for minimum wage. People having babies and all their descendants staying in one area doesn't make sense unless your population stays constant. Of course the jobs are going to run out there are just too many people. I know plenty of people from the cities who moved before it's too hard to relocate are doing fine working and enjoying nature. Resources are going to be scarce soon and the city is going to be the worst place to be.

Move.

Get the hell out of there.

I had to go to S. CA to keep working (moved from Highland, MI), and it was an adjustment, but still work'n.

2 promotions later I keep updating my resume on line and I am getting lots of calls and emails from the headhunters.

Don't give up. If what you are doing is not working, try something else...

Agreed, what i find is that some not all but some will not reduce themselves to actual labor. I am doing interviews almost weekly for training classes that start every 6 or 7 weeks. I am still astounded by people that do not come in prepared 0 enthusiasm for an opportunity at a very good job that has helped me provide for my family help me purchase a home the list goes on. I will be the first to admit it starts low around 11.50ish more with experience but the development and growth potential is huge and is only limited by your attitude and enthusiasm to excel.

Our primary goal is to higher people that want to work with us sadly most fail at trying before they get thru the door. I understand that the dynamics of employment vary by city but you gotta want it

Here's my rant about the rants about there being NO WORK....

Get a pole - you could use an old mop handle - slam a nail into the bottom of the sucker and go out pick up cans...make sure to use some sort of protective gloves. You can make a TON of money doing this AND it does NOT require you to work for some asshat. I don't know why so many people are griping when there are a ton of things you CAN do to make money that don't involve working for someone else. You can even get folks to save their cans and bottles for you, if they're not into recycling.... you will lower their trash bill for em and make cash. COME ON WORLD! WAKE UP. There are many ways still left you CAN make some cash for yourself. Start up a local service. Things can turn into an actual business very quickly this way. Up to you. Sit there and cry without any hope or go pick up some junk and do something with it. Seriously, look around you....there's money to be made but it takes a bit of creative thinking these days.

  • I have 15 yrs experience in corporate marketing management (no good because I'm 55 yrs old, which means that I'm no longer "in touch" with any markets according to all hiring managers)
  • I have 30 yrs experience on stage and in recording studios, with over 50 songs written and 3 albums recorded (no good, because I'm 55 yrs old, and music is a young man's industry - my own local pub solo acoustic efforts were rebuffed by club managers looking for younger idiots to pay for background strumming over the last several years...not because I'm not good, but because I'm not the same age as the kids that are out drinking in their pubs)
  • I have 4 books written (2 of them published) - (no good because the written word is now worthless since "content providers" have conned hack writers into giving their articles and stories away in exchange for "stars" or other competition trinkets on sites like hellium.com, that then turn around and sell those stories and articles to news and general interest websites without the writer's knowledge or acknowledgement)
  • I've got many, many years of experience managing production lines and large work projects (no good because in November of this last year I went through life saving emergency surgery on my neck/back - C7-T3 region - and now I am an unacceptable Workman's Comp Insurance liability risk for any company who might be interested in hiring me - even as a temp worker - and they would lose their policy if they did hire me)
  • I built and provided all content for three flash websites for three small businesses and have made less than $1,000 dollars and won no maintenance contract on any of them due to the fact that "there are a lot of guys out of work that'd do it for nothing - just so that they could use the site for promoting what they can do to other businesses" - (basically, one assh*le that I built a site for told that me I should be glad that he allowed me to build it for him, because now - a month after it's done - he sees no way that a website directly makes him any money. And if there's no money coming in, then where's the value in it) All smiles until he made his big "hardball" business move and showed me how slick he is. Maybe I'll put a hard drive eating virus in his site's home page for anyone who logs on? I don't know. I haven't decided yet.

Everybody who owns or manages a business has this messed up belief that if they can f*ck over somebody else, then the "Survivor" gods will bless them with raging success. What they don't know is that the people they hurt with their "good business" tactics and strategies are the ones who are driving the business they might've had away from them by word-of-mouth.

It's not a society for anyone who cares about anyone anymore. It's not a society for anyone who feels that being honest and trustworthy is a quality that makes a person that much more valuable. It's not a society that has a snowball's chance in Hell of staying like it is right now.

If you can survive the next few years, there will be plenty of wreckage to pick through if you make sure you keep to the open areas where nothing can fall on you. All the business geniuses will be landing like water balloons, so make sure the sky above you is clear before you rest even for a minute.

My 19 year old took a job at a charity habitat for humanity store that sells donated construction materials and furniture.

People started asking for delivery and the company does not offer it.

So he started delivering upon request using his own little truck and getting help from his friend (and paying him) when needed. He charges $20 if it is a one man job or $30 if two are needed (pays his friend $10 and keeps $20). He drives an old 1992 Sanoma truck.

Think outside the box...Read the book "Rich Dad, Poor Dad".

And getting rid of cans and stuff is a pain in So CA. I usually give them away to the people digging through the trash. Not a bad idea.

What about Canada? What about Sweden, or Norway? Many people are in America because their forefathers emigrated to there looking for work. Italy supposedly has a high unemployment rate, yet I can only think only of one person of my close family which is unemployed and she lives in sicily being a housekeeper. If its worse in America than in Italy and you lack the potential to get the degrees that are rare and sought after, because they require talent, you should consider looking outside the US. Maybe looking at a different state will be sufficient.

Americans love capitalism.
Capitalism means profit.
It is more profitable to move industry to the countries where the labor is cheaper.
So the american job market diminishes.
The requirements to get a job go higher. The more and more people left below the requirements.
I find it strange when one loves capitalism and at the same time expects a job for every american.
It is a free market. If no one "buys" you - die. Social Darwinism.
You do not expect the government to limit corporation profits in order to keep jobs at home, do you?

One guy collecting cans in one large area of one city is all that city can support. After that, it's full on war between them for the cans that are available.

Wake up and stop thinking like a self-help brochure. The truth is that no society can screw its own people and survive. The losers will ultimately kill off the winners, and this is exactly what has always happened throughout human history. This is why all empires have fallen. Sooner or later, the underclass gets its fill of the go-getters, and it kills them.

You and your little sunshine speech will be among the first to be taken out if everyone were to ever take you seriously.

I'm not kidding. Wake up Pollyanna.

Look for work outside your country.
I work in the northsea, on the norwegian border to denmark, and i meet ppl from all over the world.
There are lot of choices out there, but like some say, "kinda struggeling with the whole moving situation" due to family and whatnot.
Well, you see vietnamese people travel the globe to work so they can send back some money.
Sometimes i think the situation and the "Luxary" we`ve been used to live in, controls more of our lives than it should. Would you put you and your whole family in a crisis because you think that working on Greenland for a year isn`t worh it !?

I know a couple of guys who had chances to work abroad but didn`t take them beacause they didn`t want to move away from friends and family, to start a new life etc.
They could have had a good job\carreer, but juuust not where they wanted it.
In this sensless workaholich world we live in there aint much hope in waiting for the right job to come on out.
Travel the globe and look for work, espessially if your young.

A good friend of mine started as a backpacker kinda trip when he was 19, when he was 24 he had traveld half the world, most of asia, and desided to settle down in Thailand on a litle island call Koh Tao.
There he started he`s own litle photo "company" where he takes photo for tourist or something ^^

There is a world of opportunities, not just an america of opportunity.
Best of luck anywasys.
And sorry if my english is kinda confusing. ^^

The only reason I am having trouble finding employment is that I have a criminal history...otherwise, I could have a job in a week. I don't know what you're doing wrong, and I don't know what to say...except move. Find another city.

Welcome to life in America.

Maybe you'll look at a different country when the "losers" decide that they've had enough of the disparity and start burning everything? Dubai seems nice for corporate go-getters. They may not see you as desirable though. Too "white", unless your balance sheet is green enough.

Two - three more years if nothing changes. That's all you've got, Reagan. Then all the losers are coming for you and the wife and kids. You might want to make plans and start funding them. And I wouldn't bother with a bunker and guns. There won't be anything to defend after 6 months of no police or firefighters or small, medium or large businesses, or super markets, or much of anything else. You'll end up eating your gun once the rest of your world is simply eliminated.

Did you know that the New Deal is how Roosevelt prevented Communism and Fascism from sweeping away our form of government during the Depression? If not, then you should bone up on what really went down during the 1930s in this country.

You can't walk over 90% of the nation and expect to survive doing so. Maybe this time the powers that be will let you "winners" get everything you've got coming to you? Then they'll set up shop in India.

Hi JR, Star & Flag for sure~!

(though I wish I could flag this 100x~! as well as members flagging this as much, it's a awesome subject that will bring ATS members together if for nothing else than to empathize with each other and lock arms and bring some hope to the hopeless.)

I totally understand your point, and I only read the first paragraph.. my wife and I pay $1250.00/month for rent, not including electricity... I had to put out over 100 resume' and happened to go to a job fair and pick up an flyer there..

I JUST got the job on Monday, and I have zero experience in this field .. however, they pay 10.75/hr w/ bonuses and a raise after 6 weeks of training ...

Some members on here at ATS may have worked for them and had a bad experience however, it's a job with benefits

Stream Global Services

Also, check out the temp services, Volt temp, express.. as well.. I'm sure you have but in my experience with dealing with them you need to check back with them every week .. to ensure you're still looking for a job

my prayers are with you and yours .. from the heart

I happen to live 45 minutes out of Detroit in a city named new Baltimore in Macomb county. I actually just quit my job on Friday at a place called Macomb smoked meats because they start at 9 dollars an hour. They refuse to give any raises even though they continuously stacked more and more responsibility on me. They offered absolutely no benefits. They hire Mexicans whom aren't even legal citizens and due to this it drives wages down and offers these people whom are stuffing thier pockets with money, cheap labor. I operated a machine that packaged meat. It was a huge responsibility due to the paperwork I had to fill out through out the day, as well as making sure my machine operated properly and continuously.

So I ended up quitting about 2 1/2 hours into my shift and here's why. They refused to pay me accordingly, then they would write me up for missing work due to a few funerals I needed to attend as well as doctors visits that needed me to attend.

However I did not quit without a safety net. I was offered a job at a place called Michigan Production Machining. They offered me 9.25 per hour with quarter raises every month for something like 3 years. They offered me full benefits, a 401k, 10k life insurance policy, and to top it all off a tonage of overtime.

Well obviously I took that offer. So at Macomb smoked meats meanwhile I wasn't the only one to quit on a whim. Another guy had quit whome was the second machine operator out of 3 machines. They totally deserved it and I hope they lose a lot of profit for treating thier employees like a slave.

Point of this thread of mine is, there are jobs out there. They may not be what you like, but they are there. Some won't treat you very well while others will. Some jobs just don't care about you and only care about production which in my honest opinion is totally wrong. I believe that a healthy company needs healthy employees. And if a company fails or refuses to treat thier employees correctly, thier business will continue to be a revolving door.

Just my 2 cents so S & F for you bro... I hope you do find something, anything to put some cheddar in your pockets... Until you can find something else.

Military is a steady job, steady paycheck and great benefits. Don't want to go to war? Do some research and pick a job that will keep you state side or on a ship or something. I joined the Corps when I was 18, got a job in intelligence, got out and made 6 figures, WITHOUT a worthless piece of paper saying I'm educated (LOL) the next day for a DoD contractor. Was it hard? Yes. Was there Bull#? Yes. Find me a job where there's no BS or just go find that one then.

There's always outs, but perhaps it requires you to step outside your comfort zone. Also requires quitting the mary j or any other stupid illegal narcotic one may be on.

I'm not arguing with you, it is ROUGH right now! Just don't forget that there are always outs.

Hello fellow michigander, ill tell ya what man I hear ya loud and clear. I have applied at every place that takes an application. Fortunatly I did find work but it took a year(the hardest year of my life) and it was at taco bell.... Im 25 and have been in the airforce , did security systems for a few years and residental flooring for several years and the only job icould get with my expirence was fast food : ( . Now it turned out ok because my experience there helped me get a second job at a deli making a few bucks more an hour, so I guess two crap jobs working 70 + hours a week can equal one decent job. But my case is very unusual I realize, as I said it took a looong time. Keep your head up friend good luck its a jungle in the michigan job market. Im not preaching to you on what type of jobs to get, just sharing my experience.

Sorry for typos this was done on my phone cant really proof read.

Humble and happy to work,
Citizenjack.

The OP is talking about Detroit, and if you think there are tons of jobs there, then you are nothing short of delusional and completely out of touch with reality.

A smart person would move. If you can't put food in your mouth in Detroit then you F"ing move, how hard is that to figure out? I guess that is why I have a job and they don't, I can think critically.

And who are you to tell people what they need to do? Are you dictator-in-chief or what?

There no jobs available because of the parasitic nature of capitalism itself. It puts shareholder profit and an absurd amount of weight on education over physical exertion.

People should NOT have to move excessively to find a decent paying job. Allowing corporations and wealthy assholes to do anything they want IS the problem! Put tariffs and cut back on some of the choking chicken-# legislation and see how fast employment returns to normal. But no the whole purpose according to washington is to crash the economy by putting everyone on welfare and unemployment while continuing to ship jobs overseas.

Then comes the digital currency because people don't want to pay taxes and the verichip implants for all the trouble makers. Yeah we get it but we don't have to be happy about it either!
