I have lived 65 years now and have observed quite a bit of what has happened to America. I honestly believe that the system has been directed over the years to become what we see today. What we have is a desperate work force that is becoming more willing to "sell their souls" for a job. The result is in a word SLAVERY.

We live in facist America, a state in which government and corporations conspire to dominate the people or what they refer to as "human resources". What TPTB want is everybody, in one manner of the other, beholding to the corporate/government alliance. If you have a mortgage, student loan, passport, drivers license, etc you must submit to the authority of this alliance. I laugh when I hear people actually say America is a land of freedom. What freedom? You are free to do what ever you wish as long as you have the ok of the facist state. Slaves have NO freedom. Unfortunately the job situation is the final nail in the coffin for freedom in this country.

No job + no hope + no freedom = SLAVERY

Ya, they say it was a trainee driving and the trainer was a sleep in the bunk. Both died in that crash. Down a 700' ravine and I guess the wreck is still down there. That is some scary stuff there. I wonder if the trainer had time to wake up... Just a moment of realization before being mangled in that wreck.

I don't ever think I could be a trainer if I was to go back. I never got trained like that. I went to Truck Driving school and I was put in the hot seat on day one. Now, you have to drive with someone for a couple of months after school before they cut you loose.

that is kinda messed up... putting trainers with people who have not been on the road long... and on donner pass. it seems like they could at least make a lot of loads smaller and not have as many long trailers or something. it just seems like company greed. I've heard a lot of crazy stories about distribution... going up the hogs ass to get the ham sandwich. the whole cross country distribution thing needs to be rethought.

I'd like to go somewhere things are done more locally. I'd like to live in a small village or something in another country... but not alone... then i would feel lost and wish i was back where i could be connected.

things are just so mixed up and crazy, it truly is a rat race.

I have felt for a while that the availability of information on the internet was so important, to start teaching people once again how to do things on their own, make things with their own hands.. but you know in the last few years it seems that they are making it harder to get that info that people started feeling inclined to publish. we SHOULD all be connected and we SHOULD not be so inclined to horde info for a buck but we should also be able to make the most of our immediate local resources.

justa side note about that. i was thinking that this summer i could go pick wild blackberries that grow all around here like i used to when i was young... but i am not seeing any. then i remembered that they used to spray the ditches with something and it was supposed to be for mosquitoes. i am not seeing any black berries. you go into a store and black berries are 4 bucks for a tiny carton! why are they so damn much when you used to be able to just go outside and pick blackberries??! I seriously think they have killed many of them... killed the roots.

what the hell is going on in our world?

Observing America from a distance, it seems to me that the prevailing ethos in America is "devil take the hindmost". This ethos is dressed up as "freedom", "enterprise", "opportunity", "growth", "success", "wealth".

It omits social responsibility. It decrees that there are only two categories of people in the world, winners and losers. It says that the winners have the right to do anything they can to squeeze anything they can squeeze out of the losers.

It is a social contract that is built to collapse and it is collapsing.

It appears as if there are fewer and fewer legal means to become a winner and that would be winners are resorting to massive fraud to clamber into the winners' circle.

Socialism is despised in America but it has the advantage of including more categories of people than winners and losers. It has a social contract that is more realistic in the sense that it understands that a healthy happy society includes "runners up" of many classes, not just winners and losers.

Until America gets wise to socialism it will continue to move toward greater and greater personal and national criminality.

Thankyou for that exchange and for straightening my view about the Land of the Pharaohs. The update about election results was very helpful. I have hoped that things would change for the better for Egypt. According to you they have. Apparently you are not Egyptian however. And in Tourism? Just by the by, thats what CIA operatives always say when asked what they do in foreign countries. Are you connected with the US embassy by any chance? Your english is exemplary.

All clowning aside, thanks for your input.

You're welcome and, no, I'm not connected with the Embassy at all.

My English should be good; I was educated in the west. And on that topic, middle and upper class Egyptians learn English. Haven't you noticed the signage of demonstrations? Both Arabic and English.

Online resources are great - I've found a lot of leads. Some I've been called back within an hour of applying.

The biggest issue is that companies are cutting costs. I am being offered pay that I made.. 15 years ago. That's rather depressing and unacceptable. I am not going to take 25k less. I'll take my time and find something equitable to what I was making previous.

You have to humiliate yourself- for yourself.

I can guarantee you that that majority of the people on this site have jobs cleaning feces off of someones ass.

You know that whole "do what you love" saying?

Well- I think its true. And as a music man- im sure you should already know that.

Theres always that kid on the block that has everything you dont. So its up to you to earn it anyway possible.

Men with more on their plate than themselves know this, they have no choice but to clean the crap- and go down fighting for the right to clean the crap.

My job sucks. I get paid crap(no pun intended). Only thing keeping me there are the hours that they give me.
Not like back in the day where you can just quit then get a job the next day(I miss those days).

Now a days- You have to fight your guts out to get a decent position. Cause if one thing is for certain- there are millions of people fighting for the same thing you are. So that should say something about the situation this country faces. There are no jobs. You are absolutely right. Just take a look at the Unions. Good luck.
If you want to flip burgers- learn spanish. If you want to go construction-learn spanish-go non union-and act spanish. Or go union- and never work.

Or- we can stop waiting for people to give us opportunities when we should be making them for ourselves.

Like me- This thursday- Im going to go out- buy a new mig welder-a re-learn my old trade. Then-Ima build myself a trailor to haul it around, and start making money when I can.

Why wait for them right ? This is a race and Im not comming in last.

The only problem is that you reach "maximum capacity" quick.
AKA DEAD END JOB
but yeah, if you have no goals then proceed..
or... I mean, if your goal is to drive a truck for 20 yrs to buy a mediocre home.,.

Sorry, but this is a load of bunk, really, an absolute load of bunk.

Right out of high school, I did not have the money for post secondary education, and did not want to go into debt, so I started operating heavy equipment for a local constructions company, this of course meant I was laied off for 4-6 months of the year (winter) and I wanted more. I found a job working as a night clerk at a truck stop, and "interned" at a trucking company during the day. It only took 3 months and I had my CDL, I started off hauling "hopper bottoms"locally, then progressed to dry can freight (more money, but longer hours/days away).

With my heavy equipment experience, I landed a job doing flat deck work, oversize/heavy haul. I made for several year in the 70K-74K range. after 8 years of driving, I decided I wanted to be home more, so moved west into oil country (SE Saskatchewan, not Alberta) and started driving truck there, and working service rigs during "spring road ban", and eventually worked into a shop foreman position with a geological coring company, gaining experience on drilling rigs. The hours got too long, and my mother passed away, leaving me to help care for my ailing elderly father, and the foreman job was too much in the way of time commitments, so I started working for a company driving "Hot Shot", which is expedited oilfield hauling for a company servicing the service rigs.

I currently work for another hot shot outfit that caters to the drilling side of things, and now earn $25 an hour, soon to be going up to $30, granted, I don't work a regular 40 hour week some weeks less, some weeks more, but it allows me the flexibility to look after my dad. Are there down sides? Sure, when I am on call, I can get calls 24 hours a day, bu the company provides me with a nice truck to drive. and the boss is not a look over your shoulder type.

This year has been unusual, in that spring "road ban" has been longer than usual, so I find myself delivering pizza for "Dominos" in the evening, anything to make an honest living, is it "beneth" my skill level as a professional driver? Sure, but the owner hired me over a few other people because of my clean record, and safe driving experience, on the flip side, I am/was a regular customer, and i did not even need to show him my resume, when I walked in and asked if they were looking for drivers, he recited back to me my regular order, and, and said he would give me a call, no need to see my resume (I have pulled up in my work truck with trailer and often load often enough for him to know I am an employable and experienced driver).

An hour later he called me and told me to show up "tomorrow at 4pm", he knows I am there until work picks up after road ban, but I did tell him I would be interested and willing to stay on after as a part time driver, I have a few "investments" I would like to make, and a little extra cash would go a long way to making them a reality, he liked the idea.

In short, truck driving is not a "dead end" job, unless nothing less than being the CEO of a fortune 500 company, and the greed that goes with it, id your nature. I know drivers that have been behind the wheel 30 years, and make insane amounts of money, you know, they don't let just anyone pull "superloads", or those high ticket items around, send it with the wrong guy, and it won't make it there in one piece. I know guys that might work 1 -2 weeks a month doing specialty hauling, and make pay checks that would make your toes curl. Heavy haulers are often called "a trucker's trucker" for a reason.

Truck driving can be a dead end job if you have no aspirations, skill, you are lazy, or just incompetent though, but that would be for any career.

I always thought that would be a cool job, but the thought of trying to back one of those things into a loading dock...

I don't know how they do it.

A little secret, it is probably easier than backing up your garden trailer or boat, the longer the trailer, the easier it is to keep behind you while backing up.

Instead of sitting on the internets and emailing resumes, i walked into the front offices of every business, factory, shop around, talked, joked, made friends, further leads, etc and have not only always had work, but am now taking a year off and have about 6 offers on the table for when im ready to work again.

Hitting the local bars after work hours and shooting the ships helps too

You are right, but just one piece of wisdom to share on that, limit what you drink, and don't get drunk, be polite about it, don't overstay your welcome either.

For example I saw a fast food job ad that said you needed 1 year experience in fast food. I don't even have that and I have held 20 jobs in my life.

Any money earned is honest money, I am a experienced OTR truck driver, with much of my million miles doing heavy haul and dimensional, I am currently delivering pizza while things are slow in the oil patch, I have not done that since I was teen (well, I actually worked at subway and Tim Horton's), and frankly, I am having a blast! Oh, and the employee discount is not bad at all wither, the Philly Cheese steak is to die for..........

You want to buy a house? $1,500 a month plus taxes of $300
You want to rent for a small family? $1,500 a month
Groceries? $800 to $1000 a month
Car/Gas/Maintenance and Ins? $1,200
Phone/Internet/TV/Cell? $200

I don't know where you live, but I live in SE Saskatchewan, oil country, high cost of living here.

I down sized my home (I take care of my father) to a mobile home, and rent a lot in a park, currently looking at an fixer-upper in a community 30 min away to buy for a steal of a price. I own outright my 1991 Dodge Dakota, complete with peeling pain, but she purrs like a kitten, with a loving 330,000K on the clock, not an ego ride by any means, but it sure beats big insurance and loan payments. I grow a garden, and eat simple, not fancy, and even harvest the odd edible wild (dandelion greens are actually quite good in a stir fry. salad, or pasta sauce). I have a baseline cell phone older BB Curve), no iPhone 4s or the next fad for this guy, base internet, no cable, and use calling cards for long distance.

You want to buy a house? $400 a month plus taxes of $300/yr (yes, these are correct numbers for the house I am looking at)
You want to rent for a small family? $607 a month (pad rent)
Groceries? $300 to $450 a month
Car/Gas/Maintenance and Ins? No payments on truck, $64 insurance (good driver discount), $150 gas, $25 maintenance (do work myself)
Phone/Internet/TV/Cell? $80 Phone/internet (Streaming/podcast TV is fine, and no more than my net hookup) $75 Cell (company pays $50 of it as it is used for work as well)

$607 Pad rent
$450 Food
$64 Car Insurance
$150 Fuel
$25 Maintenance
$80 Internet, Phone, TV
$25 Cell
=
$1401.00

Time for you to downsize, take care of your needs not wants or ego, and humble yourself a little.

PS, the house I am looking at is a fixer-upper, not a palace, but is more than livable, I can do the work myself, and comes with the lot the house the lot is on, and the empty lot beside it, with the option for a 3rd attached lot that has a derelict house on it (needs basement repairs, a collapsing wall.), the two lots would be paid off in just over 5 years, the 3 lots would be just under 8 years at the $400 month payment rate, shorter if the mortgage holder passes before it is payed off (insurance, private mortgage)

Not trying to brag, just pointing out that you can live "on the cheap" if you are not a high maintenance person who defines themselves by their palace, or their car. the type of people that snicker at the vehicle I drive or the home I live in (not huge, but not a dump either) are exactly the type of ignorant, fake people I would not want as friends or associates anyways, so no worries for me.

You will declare to me that you know my situation more, that I should find a trade, that I should have more talents, be more accessible to the job market, find a certificate, get a degree, kill myself.

Well honestly this is my rant, the lack of Jobs in america, the big issue, the remaining issue. Go flip burgers you will say, well i just get through the interview, go do some other job, well they just turn me down for someone with more experience.
Welcome to the credential society! Jobs are becoming more difficult for average joes to become more accessible, Detroit, industrial city, easy job search right? Wrong, Unemployment is up an those who fell in the cracks of the void (after unemployment is over) are doom.
Welcome to the real world. Age 27, 5 years janitorial, Direct care worker (handicap) certified, 2 associate degrees, 2 years in assembly, industrial lines, 2 years grocery, 10 years experience as an audio engineer with 2 years professional intern

This is what I have become rapidly into, in a society that wants you to have (5 years experience on a machine press) or some Register nursing degree, or some other CDL hilo certified job

Everything is all mobilizing into education, which i am getting into (teaching) yes i know its a horrible job market, dont rub it in, at least i want to do something i like, mister accounting, ski lifting instructor.

Welcome to detroit

The fact is there are no jobs, at least in the midwest. Job markets are crap. Go do something stupid, there are plenty of jobs with massive lay offs, major pay cuts, outsourcing ect.

You cannot start a family getting paid 7.50 a hour. You need at least 10$.

All jobs no return in phone call or response. Internet search sites are (not all) a waste.
Don't even say start a home business, you dont know my living situation

It is a human and should be a human right to get a job, when you can't society gets piss. We americans (at least detroit, cause detroit is pissy enough) should uprise against these social constraints that are destroying america, THESE ARE REASONS WHY WE BECOME DOPE SLANGERS AND MURDERERS.

But i do have to LOL at myself

I empathize and can relate very well. As someone not cut for the corporate world, and one who disdains manual labor at the same time, trying to fit in to society's mores can be an ordeal for me. I recall my great-grandmother telling me once that during her younger years one can get a job by one's personality alone. Not anymore. Everything is so degree-reliant that the capabilities of numerous individuals are shortchanged. People who usually get degrees are dorks and sheep with chips on their shoulders. Any wonder why the world is such a mess with them allowing to get as far as they do? I wouldn't be surprised if the layovers, the difficulty in obtaining jobs, the stifling of individuality, the forcing of conformity, etc., is all part of a plan to keep society weakened and more and more dependent on big brother to get by on it's day to day existence.

If you see this, please respond to [email protected] (I know stupid move to open myself up to this, but that's the situation I find myself in).

I am a software/systems professional (TCP/IP, Linux, Unix,...), been looking for work for a while now, and I would like a shot at one of your positions. Would gladly relocate if I can pass your hiring tests.

I noticed that the author of this thread was fuming a bit about lack of jobs in Detroit. And he is right, oh boy how right he is. I will try to explain how Detroit got into constant job bleeding, which turned from seasonal periods to constant anaemia.
Any healthy community relies on healthy job market, and Detroit being a cradle of car industry enjoyed privileges of middle class at its finest. The backbone was manufacturing which included many suppliers such as Delphi that was providing components for GM, for example. As time passed, Japan became so nasty and refined in quality that Detroit lacked behind in any segment except chrome plating area stacked on one car.
it was about survival of those who can adapt, not the ones who could squeeze out more ponies from their rusty OHV cast iron blocks or who could spray more chrome on their rims trying to hide drum brakes. The pale face of Detroit bled more, once they tried to rosy up their lead white cheeeks by regrilling every existing car into plethora of faceless derivatives with fancy names like Cutlass Calais .It was imbred engineering which bred unhealthy copy genome. A gazillion dollar Caddy was virtually indistinguishable from a managerial Buick. As if rebadging and regrilling was not enough, Detroit resorted to even more gaudier tricks. If Antonio Gaudi intentionally sketched and built awry buildings as if cast from Tussaud`s wax, then Detroit`s lack of fit and finish was a mere result of negligence. No two Pontiacs were the same as each had different size of gaps between panels, and different cycle of durabilty, only stars could tell. As to texture of plastics, only retired and blind Toys`R`US employees could nod a yepp upon. With such attitude sales dived steeper than a pre-pubescent chinese girl in Olympic games. No splash here. Except champagne at CEO lounge celebrating `streamlining` of busines strategies.
Another nail in Detroit`s coffin was bludgeoned by product overhaul cycles which were so slow that a sloth in comparison would look like Bruce Lee in time lapse. A decade of nosejobs and regrilles were usual strategy of `reinventing` a product. The sales plummet exacerbated.
While top managerial mouthpieces of eloquency couldn`t wriggle out of this one, they came up with a brilliant plan. if you can`t make it -fake it. From now on they used intense platform sharing, engine borrowing and component outsourcing. The last dogs at Delphi were shot, and engineers pink slipped to oblivion. Basically your average Dodge had Mitsu gutworks, Your caddy had more to do with prloletariat Opel than domestic engineering and your blue oval was a spun -off siamese of Mazda. Reliabilty was regained. So was fit and finish. Consumer cofidence seemed peachier. While Detroit itself fumigated away last remains of local intelligence by simply making them redundant. As in being fired. While factories were balmed or annihilated, people became disposable while CEOs rejoiced with bonuses and perks skyrocketing , Chardonnay Sauvignon rivers on top floors at renessaince center waterfalling..Detroit was a mecca of inventivness, a nest of human ingenuity that laid golden eggs. It took just a couple of decades of incompetence that falcon punched the golden goose to a late one. Sad.

When my wife got into her car accident I had to come off the road and we burned though our savings while I went to school. Never had to apply for welfare though. I can say I took every crappy job I could find and I went to a church or two to get food more than a few times.

Now I rotate my "end of the world" supplies and take them right to the church!
