This is my rant, and many of you obviously will tell me how to conduct my life, tell me I am making horrible choices and that it is my fault that I am unhireable. You will declare to me that you know my situation more, that I should find a trade, that I should have more talents, be more accessible to the job market, find a certificate, get a degree, kill myself.

Well honestly this is my rant, the lack of Jobs in america, the big issue, the remaining issue. Go flip burgers you will say, well i just get through the interview, go do some other job, well they just turn me down for someone with more experience.
Welcome to the credential society! Jobs are becoming more difficult for average joes to become more accessible, Detroit, industrial city, easy job search right? Wrong, Unemployment is up an those who fell in the cracks of the void (after unemployment is over) are doom.
Welcome to the real world. Age 27, 5 years janitorial, Direct care worker (handicap) certified, 2 associate degrees, 2 years in assembly, industrial lines, 2 years grocery, 10 years experience as an audio engineer with 2 years professional intern

This is what I have become rapidly into, in a society that wants you to have (5 years experience on a machine press) or some Register nursing degree, or some other CDL hilo certified job

Everything is all mobilizing into education, which i am getting into (teaching) yes i know its a horrible job market, dont rub it in, at least i want to do something i like, mister accounting, ski lifting instructor.

Welcome to detroit

The fact is there are no jobs, at least in the midwest. Job markets are crap. Go do something stupid, there are plenty of jobs with massive lay offs, major pay cuts, outsourcing ect.

You cannot start a family getting paid 7.50 a hour. You need at least 10$.

All jobs no return in phone call or response. Internet search sites are (not all) a waste.
Don't even say start a home business, you dont know my living situation

It is a human and should be a human right to get a job, when you can't society gets piss. We americans (at least detroit, cause detroit is pissy enough) should uprise against these social constraints that are destroying america, THESE ARE REASONS WHY WE BECOME DOPE SLANGERS AND MURDERERS.

But i do have to LOL at myself

Sending hugs your way...

I live in a large city in Texas and I cannot find a job. I am young, I am 22. I have only had one job and it was only for a couple of months. That was 4 years ago. About 2 years ago I got car, witch is when I started looking for a job. I live in a suburb and their is nothing within walking distance. I have been looking for 2 years, I groom, talk to managers ect... I cannot find a job because I have no experience. I AM FREAKING 22, GIVE ME A BRAKE!!!! I have been to every shop with in 40min of my house.

You can have my job, I'm just about done with it.

You can be berated everyday by my supervisor for no reason, you don't know how to do this, you don't how to do that, don't go in there, don't do this. Nothing is ever right

And, not to mention clientele always copping some BS excuse of [racism] because you card them. I card everybody. Now, I'm not allowed to do even that, according to my manager. No thanks to him.

Tomorrow, I'll probably be written up, cause she was on the phone to someone about me.

There are loads of jobs around.

I fear that many of the people complaining about lack of jobs are those who are too picky or stuck-up to apply for jobs which they think are ''demeaning''.

Right, make your reality from you mind. Stop being negative and stop thinking your thinking about failure and stop being so non job worthy in a booming economy, read the secret and make your mind turn into a golden cranium of martian origin
(sarcasm for the non enlightened sarcasm jedi's of ATS)

I hear you and I honestly wish you the best of luck.

I do not know what to say to you expect I have read your post and be yourself whenever you can manage to do so.

All the best and post of your future times too as quite often people only post of the bad.

I admire you ability to laugh at yourself, that alone shows spirit and courage in trying times!

My sis and her family were stranded in FL with no jobs or money. She said hundredes lined up for a supermarket cashiers job. I lent them big bucks, and got them back home, and they rented a better home than we own. (Using my money of course...) That is not how you manage money. Grrr... Anyways they both got jobs, and then never paid me back. Happy ending for them, but not myself. How is that for gratitude? Anyways, in my Western PA area, I bet I could get multiple job offers. Location... location... location....
Something you may want to think about. Us folks did hear rumors about a recession in the US, is that true?

Not demeaning. It takes a very special person who has the patience to work with folks who need help. Kudos to you.

I wouldn't consider either of those two jobs as ''demeaning''. However, many people would, and, as such, will not target jobs such as those.

You could always go beg from the Tigers fans. Those dudes make a killing during the games. I always see them in the casinos after the game blowing their huge wads of cash. Just an idea since you said you were in Detroit. I've technically been unemployed since 09 and I know where you are coming from. Things are terrible here in SE Michigan. Our town was hit hard when Crysler was struggling a few years back. Now the proving grounds are hoppin, but no new jobs. Only jobs for returning workers.

Go to one of the many hospitals in the Detroit area. You can fill out your application on their computer at their HR office. Hospitals constantly hire for housekeeping and kitchen/cafeteria work (They are the two fastest turnovers in most hospitals), and sometimes patient transport. You might even have to start on-call. Once you are in the door and give them 6 months of your time you can bid on another opening. I'm proof positive that it works, at least in SW Michigan. Take a medical terminology course and an anatomy and physiology course (many places will honor an online study and most will reimburse you for the classes. Those two courses would open a lot of doors for you to move up into a higher paying gig. The key is being able to humble yourself for a while and plan on bidding on an internally posted job. It's the way the game is played. Hospitals, unlike factories and food service, have a pretty wide array of positions to choose from if you are willing to go the distance. Just a suggestion. Hope it helps. And good luck to you. Just be humble and pleasant if you can score an interview. Keep your goals to yourself while committing to joining their team and being dependable with the promise you will support them in your position. You might be surprised where it could take you.

my honest opinion is that the auto industry needs to transform itself into a auto/electronic industry, rather than just cars. Combine auto and silicone valley into michigan. Then see a world of change, but it will never happen.

I can't comment too much on the situation in Kansas, but here in the UK there really are jobs available if people really set their mind to it and persevere.

The main problem is that people don't want to lower their expectations and aspirations by going for a job which they consider to be ''beneath'' them.

You people that are talking about how there are jobs everywhere really need to take into account where this person is talking about.

The OP is talking about Detroit, and if you think there are tons of jobs there, then you are nothing short of delusional and completely out of touch with reality.
