President Bush & Senator John Kerry met tonight in the first in a series of debates to help determine which candidate may be the better choice for undecided voters. In a terse verbal sparring session John Kerry undoubtedly came out on top with a massive majority of internet polls showing Kerry to be the winner. A Gallup telephone poll conducted after the debate also confirmed that Kerry won.

CNN
In a CNN/USA Today/Gallup poll released Monday, 18 percent of registered voters said the debates would make a difference.
And an Annenberg Election Survey released Tuesday found that only about half of those asked could correctly match the candidates with their positions on several policy issues.

The stakes were high for each candidate as each attempted to take a clear lead in a race that has remained so close for months. With polls giving leads to President Bush but others giving it to Senator Kerry, most are just calling it how they see it and intend on voting for whoever makes a lasting policy impression. The debate served very well in this effect and was full of good talking points presented by each candidate but it was clear from the begging that Kerry had an edge. An irate Bush pushed some rebuttals and made good points but was clearly not as well spoken. The spin is already beginning.

With an estimated TV audience of over 70 million people, this debate served as a good time for potential voters to get to know Senator Kerry and to hear his views on Foreign Policy & Homeland Security. The debate was believed to be the most crucial point in this last month of campaigning and will provide a boost to the candidates in voter numbers and support.

MSNBC
CORAL GABLES, Fla. - Sen. John Kerry assailed President Bush’s prosecution of the war in Iraq in the first presidential debate Thursday night, accusing the president of “a colossal error of judgment” as the candidates finally faced each other after a torrent of speeches and hostile television advertisements.
Kerry wasted no time taking on the marquee issue of the evening, saying in his opening response to a question from moderator Jim Lehrer of PBS that “I can make America safer than President Bush has made us.”

Kerry rejected Republican contentions that he would consult too much with foreign leaders before taking action to secure America, promising that “I’ll never give a veto to any country over our security.”

FULL TRANSCRIPT OF DEBATE
LEHRER: Good evening, Mr. President, Senator Kerry.

As determined by a coin toss, the first question goes to you, Senator Kerry. You have two minutes.

Do you believe you could do a better job than President Bush in preventing another 9/11-type terrorist attack on the United States?

SEN. JOHN KERRY (D-MA), PRESIDENTIAL CANDIDATE: Yes, I do.

But before I answer further, let me thank you for moderating. I want to thank the University of Miami for hosting us. And I know the president will join me in welcoming all of Florida to this debate. You‘ve been through the roughest weeks anybody could imagine. Our hearts go out to you. And we admire your pluck and perseverance.

The debate covered Foreign Policy & Homeland Security primarily, which is believed to be the single most important issue to voters in this election. Talking points for the debate included Iraq and the subsequent insurgency and foreign policy in the future. Senator Kerry took this oppurtunity to attack President Bush on his handling of the Iraq war. The level of attacks in Iraq in the month of September reached a record 2400 separate incidents. President Bush may also use his time to chastise Senator Kerry on his controversial Senate voting record.
