Good article OP, it makes you think about a lot of things that could have been affected.

I would have 2 extra fingers to play piano with.
I would have 2 extra fingers to tickle with.
But, I would have a difficult time finding my "middle" finger to insult people with.

I'm not sure 12 fingers would change the number system and here is why. 10x10=100x10=1000x10=10000 ... very simple and logical.
12x12=144x12=1728x12=20736 ...
it requires semi complex equasions early on. No longer can you simply move the decimal point. I do not think a 12 system would ever have taken hold. It's why the metric system is superior to the standard system.

Yes...we would have developed a base 12 numerical system but reguardless of an Alien possessing 12 or 14 or 8 digits...we can easily convert into whatever based system we wish. It really doesnt matter. All that matters is the total. Split Infinity

The amazingly hot English actress Gemma Arterton was born with six fingers on each hand. It runs in her family, her father was polydactyl and on and on going way back apparently. She had a procedure as a baby to have the extra digits removed.

In the movie Gattaca, which is about genetically enhanced humans, the two main characters go to a concert by a pianist who has 14 fingers. One character explains to the other that the piece they heard can only be played by someone with that many.
