Cell Phone Towers might be blocked during NATO summit

According to RT.com

Reports suggest local law enforcement agencies are considering shutting down cell phone services in the city over the weekend and while it will most likely be very effective, many are questioning if the move is legitimate.

IMO There's no way this is legitimate. Doesn't the government remember what happened when cell phone service was shut down for a few hours on a subway in SF? People protested.

Now, add a bunch of people who were NOT protesting the NATO summit in Chicago who are all of a sudden without cell phone service...you're going to have chaos and MORE PROTESTING!

The possibility of the situation repeating itself in Chicago is not one the public is fond of. Apart from the obvious indignation at civil rights violations, people all over the web are posing perfectly reasonable questions such as what if they have to call 911? What if they have a family emergency? And why should those not involved with Occupy Chicago or any other protest movements suffer service disruptions?

The Daily Beast(where the RT article spurned from) says that...

Not only do the FBI and Secret Service have standing authority to jam signals, but they along with state and local authorities can also push for the shutdown of cell towers, thanks to a little-known legacy of the Bush administration: “Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) 303," which lays out the nation’s official “Emergency Wireless Protocols.

Are they just trying to see what they can get away with before there's an uprising? Are they simply trying to incite public outrage to put protesters behind bars?

Your thoughts?

They want to shut down the live streamers in the protest. Already, their testimony/footage has helped get many OWS wrongly arrested people out of the courts and back to their homes.

This is creepy. I am now sure they will be using force far beyond what we have seen thus far.

EDIT: Here is some good news.

All this is going to do is create a situation where there is more danger and more likelihood of things going crazy. Calling 911 is a biggie. A lot of people don't have land lines these days. Do they really think that criminals won't take advantage of that?

Not to sound like a sociopath, but I hope pandemonium does break out when this happens.

Our would-be overlords need a good swift kick in the loins, and this is an opportunity to provide that.

Yes, I'm a horrible person.

They have far more security measures there than protestors. Also, with NDAA, if mass violence did erupt. They could declare "marshal law" or whatever it legally is called. Have everybody detained. Violence is not a good thing when it is this big of an event. I am with you though, at some point, the people will say "We've had enough."

That portion of the NDAA was blocked by a federal court, two days ago?

sounds like a false flag [or a serious beatdown/kent state] is in the works
and they need to control communications* so that only the OS
can be "confirmed"

expect a lot of phones will be confiscated/broken or be remotely wiped

didn't something similar happen during the london bombings?*

note to anyone planning on protesting:
there are bluetooth/wifi apps that let you use your phone like a walky talky

also portable shortwave and ham radios

also frequencies can be altered so as to get past jamming

*also ask yourselves how police and EMS are gonna communicate
huuhmmm...

There will probably be lots of people both using this to their advantage and protesting against it.

Police officers and other emergency workers will probably use an un-blocked Walkie-Talkie band to communicate amongst themselves. Calling 911 from civilians, though, would be impossible.

It's not been confirmed that this will in fact happen. Now that the word is out that it's a possibility, it probably won't even happen.

If there are outages, then this will be a huge issue and protests will be more massive than originally planned.

ahhh thanks for the heads up [lol forgot to flag too, fixed]

perhaps some phone haxor skills could do the job?

like an app for turning on or accessing a line from a cell tower

maybe some nice drones that don't depend on cell/radio

hmm those analog tv frequencies are available now aren't they?

I'd really like to see a hacker unjam a cellphone tower. That technology could really be useful in police states and states of emergency abroad and at home.
