Complaints over use of 'Asian' label in grooming cases

Groups representing Sikh and Hindu communities have complained about the term "Asian" being used to describe the men involved in recent UK trials where 9 Muslims have been convicted of a grooming white girls as young as 13 for sex BBC.

Muslims who commit crimes in the UK are routinely referred to as 'Asian' by the media. In light of the recent high publicity trial, non Muslim Asians have objected to this.

The case itself has in fact been something of a watershed in the UK with a Judge stating that the gang preyed on five girls, aged between 13 and 15, partly because they were from different 'community and religion' Link and the head of the Equality and Human Rights Commission stating that race was relevant Link and that it would be a national scandal if it turned out the authorities had failed to intervene to protect the children because of fears that it would lead to the "demonisation" of the Asian community.

Earlier this month, nine men were jailed for being part of a sex ring in Rochdale which groomed girls for sex.

The groups said the men involved were "almost always of Pakistani origin" and the term "Asian" was inaccurate.

The Ramadan Foundation has said grooming is "a significant problem for the British Pakistani community".

The joint statement was released by the Network of Sikh Organisations UK, The Hindu Forum of Britain, and The Sikh Media Monitoring Group UK.

It says the reluctance of the media and the government to discuss the "disproportionate representation of Muslims in such cases" and the fact victims are "almost always non-Muslim girls" is adding to the cause of far-right groups such as the BNP.

It said blanket use of the word "Asian" was "unfair to other communities of Asian origin".

"We believe that in this case the government itself is sanctioning the use of term Asian as a way of clouding responsibility," the groups say.

I am not suprised that the Sikhs and Hindus have objected to the media being politically correct and associating them rapists who are all of Pakistani origin.

surely this is a simple problem to solve.....get them in a room and let them come up with an 'approved' name and job done but due to British PC it'll probably have to change every week so all we need is a website where we can get the current official word of the week and a reference number so that we can date when the new name was referenced

I watched a channel four doc uncovering it, and trust me the Paki communities she interviews were LESS than sincere! They target white girls only and said its our fault for looking too up for it, they cannot target other Asians as all the families are in a tight nit community!

Looking up for it my arse! I got asked by 4 men in the space of ten minutes if I was on the game standing at a bus stop, in my *training tracksuit*.

No I'm not on the fekking game you dirty perverts, I'm trying to get to the army base where I have an appointment, and for some silly reason its located in Pakistani town!!

The biggest problem is that the police refuse to accept race and culture ARE playing a big part in these crimes!

hello, as soon as i saw this article in the paper it made my blood boil, the media are intentionally creating a divide between all of us, if it had been a white british gang then the media wouldn't have even mentioned ethnicity so they were bang out of order for doing that. Unfortunately most people don't realise that they are being brainwashed by the media on so many levels, together we stand, divided we fall....

It's strange because just over the ocean we only refer to Pakistani, Indians and Sikhs as "South Asian", if you are referring to Asians you are speaking about people from Japan, Korea, China, Vietnam, Laos, Thailand, etc.

Of course those mentioned are from a different group than South Asians. And while South Asian is still vague, it's the same part of the world.

It is the difference between saying Arab or Jordanian. You have a Jordanian Arab who could be called either or, just one being more specific.

Then you can have different groups and dialect speaking people within a ethnic group or community.

People need to stop being so worried about offending groups by describing them as they describe themselves or as they are known by in their community. And yes culture has a huge impact over the actions of certain groups, and in some cases it can be very good things or very bad things, but I don't see the harm in recognizing it without prejudice.

There IS an agenda to divide and conquer us, but also at the same time, you cannot argue with the facts, see my first post.

The fact is these crimes are commited far less by white men because most of us over here are raised on the basis any thing goes apart from perverts! Murder can some times be forgiven... Sexual abuse, no.

Perhaps you are correct, however both the judge of the case and the coloured head of UK Equality and Human Rights Commission have stated that race was an issue. See OP for links.

Exactly. There are huge differences in many ethnic groups, simply saying "Asian" or "South Asian" is fine in some circumstances, but I find it a little racist in that it is only describing a skin color. Which is strange because people often think they are being politically correct in this labeling.

Had it been more specific, Sikh, Chinese, etc. Then if you are familiar with those groups it gives you much more information. Sikh just recently had their new years celebration with thousands of them on the streets. If someone were to refer to them as having a "South Asian" new years gathering, it would make no sense. As it was a Sikh new years celebration.
