You poor soul. Rest your legs a while, and stop spinning your wheels. They are two sides of the same coin. The only difference is what lies they use to trick their respective voters. There is no shame in beeing fooled. I felt like you once, then I woke up. The shame is when you have the obvious truth in front of you, but choose to look away.

"They are both the same" is an excuse to embrace selfish values. I usually hear the people who defend war, torture, greed, and inequality as the people who also claim both sides are the same.

Actually in the grand scheme of things I agree with you, but in our current reality what does sharing this state of mind get us? If your not openly rebeling against the puppetmaster you might as well request that he put on the type of show you want to see.

Just an FYI - I and my family are republicans, and we don't think we're all that terrible - granted, we hold to what the party USED to be quite some time back and don't subscribe to most of the platform this ilk has come up with.

Just wanted to clarify that - I've never been a fan of overly-broad generalizations as they are frequently incorrect and generally unwise.

Be well, friend.

Well said and in alignment with the OP article, which was co-authored by a conservative. I have a great deal of respect for the conservatism of old...it had great virtue in our national discourse, but the takeover of the far right in the form of TP, RINO hunts and social agenda of the evangelical right expressed through complete obstructionism...IS THE PROBLEM.

The good news is that some Republicans are seeing the extremism and breaking ranks. There are actually some reasonable people in the GOP wing of the government.

Hey BH, thanks for contributing to this thread.

As for the "reasoable" Republicans you speak of...every one of them is being targeted by far-right candidates. Some of the Tea Party freshman have even been declared RINOs and are being challenged by even further right candidates. Any republicans with the slightest history of working with the other side of the aisle is being hunted. Senator Lugar has already lost the nomination in his state...several others are on the ropes.

Both sides carry blame...but that blame is far from equal..."reasonable" "rational" "compromise" are words spoken with disdain by the far right base. The party has shifted so far right that they consider themselves insurgents, not representitives.

So? It's an election year and both Parties are smearing each other. That is an Opinion piece, not a news article.

Let me clean up the title a bit since they chose to only tell half the truth.

Let's just say it: The Democrats and the Republicans are the problem.

There, now its the truth.

And yet it was co-authored by a well respected Conservative who works for a renowned conservative think tank.

The GOP has moved so far to the right and celebrated so thoroughly thier willingness to halt/destroy/sabotage this nations government unless every demand they make is met that the headline of this OP is no longer a partisan claim, but an objective one...with conservatives across the country asking what has become of thier party.

i'm so sick of folks like you playing into the left right paradigm. The republicans have turned into imperial socialists over the last 20 years too. the only sane people who know where we should be (Pre-1913 Pre-Federal Reserve) are Libertarians. we know we need strict rules on the financial system which dont allow business to get involved with government and vice versa, and we need to have rules to protect the people from corporate vultureism. at the same time we know how to put in place near nil tax rates for the public and basically only a small corporate tax and a pretty decent import tariff to expose those exploiting cheap foreign labor and to level the playing field for domestic companies that are hiring american workers. I do not believe Romney will be able to "right the ship" and I never did. He will continue to be a stooge of the bankers and will let them run through this country and the rest of the world, eventually leading to global government/currency. Let him prove me wrong.

"However [political parties] may now and then answer popular ends, they are likely in the course of time and things, to become potent engines, by which cunning, ambitious, and unprincipled men will be enabled to subvert the power of the people and to usurp for themselves the reins of government, destroying afterwards the very engines which have lifted them to unjust dominion." GEORGE WASHINGTON, Farewell Address, Sep. 17, 1796

Says it all right there, in my opinion.

Former Sen. Danforth (R) Says GOP Becoming ‘Increasingly Inconsequential,’ ‘Intolerant’

"we have gone so far overboard that we are beyond redemption.” Danforth, an ordained Episcopal priest and President George W. Bush’s Ambassador to the United Nations,

DANFORTH: An effort by some..... to purge the Republican Party and to create something that’s ideologically pure and intolerant of anybody who does not agree with them — not just on general principles, but right across the board.

If this trend succeeds, ..... What they will be left with, if indeed they want to purge the party of all but people who have a particular ideological slant… it’s not a way to win elections, it’s not political sustainable. It might make them feel good for a time but doesn’t work, it hasn’t worked.

Former Republican Senator Hagel Says Reagan Would Not Identify With Modern GOP

Reagan wouldn’t identify with this party. There’s a streak of intolerance in the Republican Party today that scares people. Intolerance is a very dangerous thing in a society because it always leads to a tragic ending. Ronald Reagan was never driven by ideology. He was a conservative but he was a practical conservative. He wanted limited government but he used government and he used it many times. And he would work with the other party. …

Now the Republican Party is in the hands of the right, I would say the extreme right, more than ever before. You’ve got a Republican Party that is having difficulty facing up to the fact that if you look at what happened during the first 8 years of the century, it was under Republican direction. …

The Republican Party is dealing with this schizophrenia. It was the Republican leadership that got us into this mess.

I say in the short term it needs to be raised. Both parties got us here, and Iraq and Afghanistan cost us dearly, but we are still recovering from the worst financial crisis of our lifetime and a debt ceiling debacle of the kind we had last time will seriously damage the economy. We need to reform our fiscal house over the next 5 years...and this is when I miss the old-school conservatives, cuz we need them badly...absent social agenda, absent neo-cons looking for more expensive wars. What the GOP are proposing right now is declaring an intensive care patient fat and pulling out the feeding tubes and preserving all the tax breaks for the welathiest and focusing on safety nets that are needed now more than ever...No problem with rational cuts...but rational..and Timing...

No, I'M extreme right. the GOP has been infiltrated and taken over by neocons, who are undercover left-wingers. That's how they earned the name RINO to begin with.

RINOs are largely defined on social issues...not anti-gay or anti-abortion enough...

I have never seen a GOP rep. declared a RINO for being pro-war, just the opposite.

Neo-cons believe in spreading "democracey" by any way possible..wars..and are defense hawks, plus they look to legislate social/moral issues...DOMA etc. in contrast to the "less government" facade.

'left wingers" are traditionally anti-war.

Not sure how to make sense of your statement in that context?

i agree. i must say i am very much with people like Ron Paul saying we desperatley need to change our foreign policy. the wars are really the biggest thing that are killing us right now. if you ask me, neither party seems to be willing to touch that issue with a ten foot pole. what do you think?
