Contract law can be a tricky thing, but there is a reason people can download and edit, reproduce etc etc... Youtube only host's the clips on behalf the owner. It does not own the media itself...

i just did a few quick screenshots to show how easy YTByClick is.

1: in the search part type what you are looking for.
2: in the second box are the search choices, choose YouTube Search


3: a list of videos will open up choose the one you want, i chose How To Start A Fire
4: you will see on the YTByClick bar a music icon and a video icon, i chose video icon


5: a new window will open to show you that the video you chose is being downloaded,
this file goes into your download folder.

Yeah there are plenty of apps out there to direct download Youtube clips and they are legal. If it was illegal they would have been shutdown by now.

Youtube does not have any warnings about using 3rd party software to download media.

I just downloaded YoutubeDownloader from CNet and it works really well and is simple to use -

i see there is a conversion quality on that one. can you choose high quality even though its a low quality video your downloading?, i mean will it make it clearer and nicer than before you downloaded it.?

Yeah although the conversion feature is not available on the free version. Although the trailer I downloaded seems to be around 480 or maybe 720p.

So the download quality is quite good so far

The "Download Quality" space is set to best available by default and I cannot change it, that may vary with the paid full version but the free version works for me.

Technically best available should have been 1080p for that particular clip but the when I play in VLC or Media player it is cropped slightly but still good quality and resolution, the cropping maybe the MP4 encoding.. I'm not sure.

YouTube are not blocking content as the OP claimed now as it costs them to provide a service they set the rules on how you view.

It also protects the people who post videos until the next version of a downloader comes out of course.

I fully agree. We seem to have a lot of people in here that worry about copyright laws and such. I download Youtube Videos all the time, in fact, you should see my Music library, all from good old Youtube.
Got Firefox? Once you have Firefox, go HERE for useful "Add-Ons". The two you want is Video DownloadHelper,
and YouTube mp3. Click on "Tools" in Firefox and "ADD Ons." Find Video DownloadHelper, and click on "Preferences". Click on "General" and "Behavior", and "Upon Clicking Icon, Download", instead of the default setting. Now go to Youtube, and find a video you like. When it begins to play, click the Video DownloadHelper Icon and you will see a folder open. Choose your download location, and you are in business. This works on any and all Flash websites, porn sites too. There will be a website of two where it won't work, but these are few now days. I also use Flashblock, keeps the videos from playing automatically.
I am a little surprised that more of you did now know of this before.

I use keepvid.com. It gives you the option of downloading mp3s, FLVs, or mp4s, in every size available. I like it because it doesn't require any kind of add on or separate program to download, but the ones other members recommend look great too.

I'm really kind of surprised that there is a debate about this. It's perfectly fine to download from youtube. Look back 25 or so years, compare this to the home recording debate. The industry is evolving, and those in power are resisting the change instead of embracing and exploiting it. And as everyone well knows, they -do- eventually learn to exploit it.

I can't understand how some armchair legal nitpicker can sit and knock someone for downloading a video that is freely available, just because it's not being viewed how the entity wants it to be viewed. When was the last time someone obtained the expressed written consent of Major League Baseball before taping a game they knew they were going to miss? Get real.

I use ant downloader.

It's an add on for firefox and IE.
It works in the background, once you hit play on a video it is detected and the program downloads the video or audio.

What's great is once started you can navigate away from the page and it still downloads.

As far as I know, three method for your reference. Make comparison and select your desired one.

1. Online video capture, it is able to save flash videos from any sites, even works on downloading protected videos.
2. Browser extension, Video DownloadHelper for Firefox and Video Downloader for Google Chrome.
3. Media player, Realplayer is a good one.

I use internet explorer and after I've watched a YT vid, if I want to keep a copy I just look in my browser cach, rename it with the flv extension and job done. How can that be breaking T&C.
