To be fair on reality, many European nations also went into Afghanistan and shed blood with their US comrades in arms. Similarly, the US has a presence off the blighted coast of Somalia. Stopping piracy is hardly war mongering.

Regards

You do realise that European and other western forces also took part in combat operations in Afghanistan? The reality is that many don't even realise the military support from NATO to the US led Afghan intervention.

You are thinking of Iraq maybe? Where some of Europe was not involved? They were pretty much all in when it comes to Afganistan. Just we are also involved in Somalia along with them.

We're not even in Nato and my cousin just spend a year in Afganistan. Also doing law enforcement vs. occupying a country are bit different.

I guess if we had not poisoned the waters in the area and over fished. The fishermen might still be fishermen instead of pirates..

As pointed by several members, many European countries (including Portugal) were part of the forces that went into Afghanistan, what most European countries were against was the invasion of Iraq.

As for this EU force, they are supposedly working along with the Somalian Transitional Federal Government, not the same thing as Iraq or Afghanistan.

The presence of US troops in Somalia during the 1990s also included other countries, as it was an UN sanctioned intervention, mainly non-military.

Aww bless, the mighty EU-NAVFOR managed to make a few holes in a rowing boat. I'm with cerebralassassins on this one, the EU is NOT in any way benign. It is a blight on the lives of everyone in europe. I'm not religious but I'm gonna say a lil prayer for the greeks in the hope that they can elect a government that will start the domino effect around the med, and bring this foul edifice down.
For any greeks reading, I solemnly promise that if you do this, I will drink no other wine but retsina for a year, and I will buy only greek olives. Your country gave birth to democracy, and the EU is trying to smother it. For the love of life and freedom, please don't let them.

It's only the lefty/liberal/socialist/commie types that bash the American people. Myself, and most people I know hold American people in high regard. I remember the quake in Haiti, while American boots were on the ground there carrying food and medical supplies off planes, the EU leadership were still arguing over the form of the message of solidarity they were going to send.
Kind regards from UK.

I think they should blow the boats out of the water with the pirates on-board.
They should also chase down the weapons dealers who are sullying the pirates with RPGs

Somalia is a failed state. A direct result of Western foreign policy. Piracy is a SYMPTOM of a failed state. They are treating the symptom, not the cause.

I agree, violent theft is only another symptom of poor resource management. Universally. There are enough resources being produced in the world to prevent any such desperate act of neediness. The problem is that the resources are controlled by people who want money for them. If the goal of distributors was changed from making money to actually providing their products to as many people as possible they would see a decrease in violence among people who no longer feel they must resort to greed and crime in order to survive.

Piracy is not a glamorous career, if given the option these people would rather have normal jobs.
