However, the users also buy items not covered by EBT. They have smart phones, and the ladies obviously spend time at the salon. I'm all about economic equality, but I think we've created some monsters on both extremes of wealth.

BTW, the users rarely tell me they're swiping an EBT card, so we have to start over. They know they have to tell anyone who has a user operated swiper. Are the users ashamed?

Some of them buy loads of pop and candy with their EBT. What is going on?

Yes, that's why I asked the manager of 14 years. She says they're regulars, and she doesn't get it either.

Who cannot admit that the welfare system is being abused? I've seen it. I've hung out with the perpetually unemployed. College sociology taught me the same thing.

A guy I used to work with came in and used EBT for a soda. He went right from a good paying job to a good paying job. Maybe he just took a precaution when he got laid off and now is spending the last of it. BTW, he told me he was going to swipe an EBT.

Well then, the solution is easy - they need to stop taxing us for other things.
No roads, no airports, no education.

I guess you would rather not live in a civilized society where we have standards that are meant to lift all boats? No compassion for those less fortunate, only survival of the fittest?

I have no problem with "General Welfare" (roads, bridges) that is in the Constitution. Flat out Welfare is not.

I am pretty sure we give more in Israeli Military aid then we spend on food stamp! Why not cut that? A country of 15 million does not need 8.2 million dollars a day does it?

I was wondering how long it would be before Israel was brought up and/or blamed. How predictable and laughable.

What does foreign aid have to do with defense spending anyway? The OP is about cutting welfare to keep from cutting defense.

I like your idea though!! Let's cut welfare AND foreign aid and leave defense spending alone!

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu ... "Ladies and Gentlemen, if it looks like a duck, walks like a duck, and quacks like a duck, then what is it?"

1)There is no stipulation that says a food stamp user cant purchase other things.

2)Many places dont require that you tell the checker you are using EBT, so perhaps they dont know they need to. And if they did, it seems your issue here is with the system used in the store, not foodstamps.

3)If they are embarrassed, it is because not many people WANT to be on foodstamps, and the overwhelming attitude towards those that are is negative. Thus, people who are down on their luck often ARE embarrassed, because they know they are being looked down upon.

4)Like I said to another poster, if you have issue with what they purchase on EBT, then your issue is with the regulations within, not with the EBT user.

The thing that most people ignore when talking about EBT users buying candy, or things of that nature with EBT, is that it is people just like you that are the reason they are able to. People BEGGED for food regulations such as the food pyramid. People BEGGED for regulations on what could be purchased with EBT. The only way to do so was to say that anything with the pyramid on it, that is, anything classified as food, is purchasable.

We could always classify candy and soda as what they really are-drugs-and then they wouldnt be able to be purchased with EBT. Do you want foods to be reclassified as drugs?

OIC It's my fault
. I looked it up after I asked. The users are selling the candy and pop.

2)"I asked a guy"
well then, glad that guy speaks for everyone.

3)Naw, theyre ashamed because people like you look down upon them.

4)Another point missed.

5)Fear-mongered? Go back to school. Learn why things are classified as they are. No fear mongering here, just the facts of the situation which you must ignore and deflect, because they kill your argument.

Maybe you've incorrectly assumed my position in and on life. I don't look down on them. They're playing the game just like everyone else. I just wanted to let everyone know that it looks like they're good at it. I'm also more than happy to show where the government fails. I think the whole approach to insuring necessity is wrong. I'm a minority though, so I just watch and laugh at what we've got. I might as well be entertained by it.

We become autonomous. We don't provide money and labor to the "criminals". Their game can't be played without their pawns. If enough pawns walk away, this might make those "thieves and liars" a tad angry. They might dream up a reason to raid the "compound". This won't be to steal from us the old fashioned way. This won't even be to get their pawns pack. This will be as a warning to others. However, the news outlets would then be allowed and encouraged to report on these raids. It might backfire. Who knows? They probably have worked out this scenario and will already raid any successful commune just to prevent it.

I agree with what you said.
I like your use of the words they would use in order to denigrate such movements.
And believe me, these criminals have every counter attack via the media planned out, as you admit.
Words they would use to isolate those that would not play along with their game in order to steal from us would also consist of filthy hippies, anarchists, rednecks, commies, socialists, renegades and most importantly terrorists.

Every election cycle you see the newspaper headlines scream DEMOCRATS WIN!! Or they scream REPUBLICANS WIN!! But they never, never, never scream AMERICANS WIN!!

The reason for that is when DEMOCRATS and REPUBLICANS get elected, AMERICANS ARE SCREWED!!

I hate hearing the right and the left blame each other and point their fingers at each other when it is ALL OF THEM who have sold our country down the drain for their thirty pieces of silver.

STOP ELECTING THIEVING, WHORE MONGERING, LYING DEMOCRATS AND REPUBLICANS IF YOU WANT A BETTER FUTURE FOR AMERICA AND THE WORLD!

Haha, don't gotta tell me this, dude. I was saying this before it was cool. You're also talkin' to an Anarchist.

HOWEVER, the two political parties DO have differences, sometimes they're indistinguishable, sometimes they're polarized. Overall... the Democrats are the lesser evil, that's all.

Honestly, there are way to many people getting food stamps that shouldnt. I was in line last week buying stuff for my 7 year old and me, and the person in front of me was buying steaks with food stamps, and paid cash for $150 worth of hard liquor. And as I left the store, there they were, loading up a brand new Mercedes SUV in a handicap space, with no handicap plate or sticker.
Mean while I scrape by on hamburger helper hoping gas prices dont go up so I can still pay all my bills and rent.

Is someone paying you to say this? I keep hearing this same generic story, though similarly unconvincing (and almost like a copy) every single time.

Lol! No one is paying me. It happens, frequently. I have seen it more then once. Why do people have such a hard time beleiving this?

Seriously, go to a grocery store and just watch how many people today pay with EBT cards. Its a crazy amount. I was just talking to a friend who lives in Kirksville last month as he saw someone doing and they were driving a Caddy suv. People, open your eyes, the welfare system is being abused.
edit on 15-5-2012 by coop039 because: (no reason given)

Ok... so a minority of welfare users "abuse" the system. So what? That's unfortunate but to be expected. Does that mean welfare is therefore useless/failure? No way. Millions of people actually NEED welfare to stay afloat (or alive). Also, the kind of welfare you're talking about accounts for a very small amount of our taxes. Try not to focus on the ant stealing crumbs while the elephant (major multinational corporations, banks, politicians, etc.) raid your entire kitchen and kick you out of your own home.

Umm, actually it's my understanding that you can only spend welfare assistance on certain goods, like ACTUAL FOODS, and not things like alcohol, cigarettes, or excessive things.

This quote says it best, and how all reps should be responding;

No, we will not balance the budget on the backs of working families, the elderly, the sick, the children, and the poor, who have already sacrificed enough in terms of lost jobs, lost wages, lost homes, and lost pensions. Yes, we will demand that millionaires and billionaires and the largest corporations in America contribute to deficit reduction as a matter of shared sacrifice. Yes, we will reduce unnecessary and wasteful spending at the Pentagon. And, no we will not be blackmailed once again by the Republican leadership in Washington, who are threatening to destroy the full faith and credit of the United States government for the first time in our nation's history unless they get everything they want.

~STATEMENT BY SEN. BERNARD SANDERS

hopefully the senate kills it.

You really should study a little about the founding fathers. Because Jefferson wrote to Madison that the wealthy should be taxed for as much as they can get out of them to pay for social services for the poor. And had the second bill of rights been passed the it would have been the governments job to make sure people had jobs and housing.

Star and flag for an important story.
There's nothing I can add that hasn't been said already except perhaps to add my personal disdain for Eric Cantor who sadly represents my state of Virginia.
He's a John Warner wannabe neocon nutcase who thinks the indigent deserve what they get.
I have to wonder if some of these people in government ever had a mother or were they spawned like orcs deep underground?
