The Olympic flame, in all of its purity and wholesome glory, is worth nothing if it is not in its virgin state. In 1976, the flame went out at the beginning of the Montreal relay, and when it was relit with an official’s Bic lighter, the entire urn was doused (along with the official’s reputation) and relit using one of the numerous back-up torches.
