‘Trayvon Amendment’ Would Deny Federal Funds to States that Allow Self-Defense

House Democrats said Tuesday they will offer an amendment to push to overturn stand-your-ground self-defense laws in states like Florida.

'Federal money shouldn't be spent supporting states with laws that endanger their own people," said Reps. Raul Grijalva of Arizona and Keith Ellison of Minnesota, the two Democrats who are offering the legislation. "This is no different than withholding transportation funds from states that don't enforce seat-belt laws."

www.washingtontimes.com...

Claiming that stand your ground laws have "cost too many lives already" our lawmakers seek to weaken or overturn our individual rights to protect our own lives. This would throw us back to a you must retreat when faced with violence doctrine which will only make it easier for criminals to assault someone without the victim being able to legally defend themselves.
While this might sound reasonable to some most assaults are committed by young males who are capable of running down anyone they choose. What about the disabled? How will they be able to "retreat first" before defending themselves?

Withholding funds is how the Federal government weakens individual and state rights while aggregating power for themselves. Whatever shreds were left of the Bill of Rights are nearly gone and the most basic right of all - to preserve your own life is under attack.

Such a shame that criminals are now endangered. They mean a great deal of money to the for-profit prison system. I'm afraid many will support this for no other reason that it's name: The Trayvon Amendment. That means it must be a good thing, right?

Well, to be fair, I think the affected states should withhold federal money from the federal government. In example, federal income tax from its citizens, for a start.

I would love to see them come and try to take my gun...

It's going to take everybody to stop these powers from suppressing us...

But it's for our safety

I completely agree with this. I think this could potentially start a second civil war.

Let's all feel sorry for the criminals. They deserve our pity right? They work hard all day beating, stabbing , murdering, all to get money for drugs, or that nice gold chain at the pawn shop. We should just relax. Let them bully, rape and rob without a fuss. After all, we should be used to it by now. The politicians have been at it for years.
Crooks need to come to a realization. We're fed up. People are hurting and they don't want some scum taking what little they have left over after paying bills. I'll give them what I have in my pocket. About an ounce at a time.

Good.

States receiving federal funding is part of the bigger problem as it is.
States do not need the feds anyway, this is a perfect opportunity for states to start breaking free of the feds.

Good move, now this I can agree with.

If the feds want to take away federal funding then I do not care how they go about it, as long as it gets done.

Somehow this whole thing seems to be a setup from the start with Trayvon Martin's death just to pass the amendment.

They probably had the ammendment printed and done up and were just waiting on an incident that they could capitalize on.

Ok. Read it, walked away for a bit to cool off. Now.

So were gonna write a bill to remove funds for states that have " Stand your ground laws" based on a case that has not even gone to trial yet. We have no idea what really happened that night yet and were gonna pass more laws to controll funding. Wouldn't ya think they might want to let the justice system run its course. And even if they thought that the state judical system fail they always have the option of bring federal charges against him afterwards.

This is a no more than a PR. stunt and power grab. Another excuse for Washington to get money or control from the rest of us.

This is ludicrous. We're reaching the tipping point between a facade of democracy and outright fascism/corporatocracy/national socialism I feel. That this is even being considered makes me not want to live in this country anymore and it makes me not want to be beholden to these puppets in DC

This shows how stupid our Government is:

Take more power more control over something that is already illegal.

The assault on the second amendment continues and they will never quit and they will never yield.

That "law" didn't save Martin and it won't save the next "victim" the only thing it does it "clean up after the fact"

They really do not have a brain among them.

So,

"In Florida alone, deaths due to self-defense have tripled since the law was enacted. "

This is a useless statistic unless compared directly to the "deaths due to criminal attacks" numbers.

If before the law went into effect, 10 bag guys per year were killed in self-defense shootings, and afterwards 30 bad guys per year were killed in self-defense shootings, and before the law went into effect 200 victims of criminal assault were killed each year by bad guys, and after the law only 150 victims of criminal assault were killed each year, then the "Stand Your Ground" law has saved 30 lives per year.

They are only looking at one side of a two sided equation.

Just looked at some raw number and ran some stats: www.disastercenter.com...

The Murder rate pre "Stand Your Ground" in 2000 - 2004 averaged 13.5 per 100,000 population.
The Murder rate post "Stand Your Ground" in 2005 - 2010 averaged 7 per 100,000 population.

Adjusted to match current population, that means that since the Stand Your Ground law went into effect, there were 1,012 less Murders per year in Florida. Lives saved = 6,075.

The "self-defense shootings" prior to Stand Your Ground were 12 per year.
The "self-defense shootings" post Stand Your Ground were 38 per year.

Additional Lives lost due to "self-defense" = 156
Additional Lives saved due to "Stand Your Ground" = 6,075

That's a total net savings in lives of 5,919 people who are still walking around alive.
