US unemployment fell to 8.1pc in April as 115,000 jobs were created, but the bulk of the drop was due to the hundreds of thousands of Americans who stopped looking for work as they believed there were no positions available.

Employers hired a modest 115,000 workers last month, the Labor Department said. But those new jobs were more than offset by a drop in the labour force of 342,000 as people abandoned their search for work.

The participation rate - the percentage of the population currently in work - slipped from 63.8pc to 63.6pc last month, a 30-year low. The number of "discouraged workers" - those who are not actively looking for work because they believe there are no available jobs - reached 968,000.

The Telegraph

I don't understand how unemployment figures don't include all of the unemployed.

522,000 left the labor force last month and now there are 88,419,000 not included in the unemployment figures. An all time high

How can they count unemployment but ignore 88,419,000 people without a job? 8.1pc unemployment my a**.

The vast majority of Americans will never look into the information you did. They just take it at face value. Unemployment is whatever big brother says it is.

It's all part of the sting.

Someone put up a really great cartoon video the last time this came up.

Basically they look for ways to not count people as unemployed.

If you are an airline pilot but work at a fast food place, then you don't count as unemployed.

If you failed to look for a job, then you don't count as unemployed.

And on and on...

Oh, here it is.

Personally, am an engineer, working as a technician. But I really like the job and the pay is good.

It may be cause people are finally seeing that the material things we have are only wants not needs, and these people are in power cause we want these things. when we no longer need/want their crap will things truly change.
