Can you imagine the impossible? I dont know the science of it all but a terrorist attack at CERN could be devastating no? Id like to think it would cause a tear in the time space continuum and send us all back into a time loop and all kinds of trippy '___' reality trips... in reality it would prolly just blow the [snip] outta CERN huh?

Not sure about the validity of the article itself, but if true and he is only getting 5 years....that is kind of sad.

He wasn't charged with plotting a terrorist attack against CERN, he was a researcher at CERN.

A bit more coming out on this story now, see below:

news.nationalpost.com...

A point of interest, the headline reads: "Former CERN nuclear scientist convicted of terror plot gets five years in jail"

However, within the article it says: "The trial of Hicheur, who was charged with criminal association as part of a terrorist enterprise,"

Surely "convicted of a terror plot" and being charged with "criminal association" are different things?

However, this is a bit puzzling: "Prosecutors focused on emails between Hicheur and an alleged al-Qaeda contact"

So prosecutors based a conviction on emails between the convicted and an ALLEGED contact within an organisation that doesn't exist! From evidence, either this contact was or was not part of a ficticious organisation?

Someone please explain

Not just France either.

Islam - For a religion of peace, it sure does seem to have a lot of terrorists.

Lol, and you sure are gullable.

They have a map of terrorist networks out in the public, saying we know exactly where they are, but they are allowed to exist?

Actually MI6 set up a miltitant mosque in Germany as well to act as a honey pot for terrorists.

Wannabe jihadists flocked in by the droves.

MI6 set up fake mosque in Europe to attract Muslim extremists

It was a great success.

It's a very slippery slope, that's what it is.

There is a difference between having and sharing extremist views, and being an actual terrorist.

If I was a muslim, maps like this would be way more threatening,

Just saying.

So reading between the lines, the below linked article cites:
"The Merah case has stirred up such a national fervor that re-election-minded President Nicolas Sarkozy has floated a proposal to make it a crime to repeatedly visit jihadist websites — in part because French counterrorism officials fear “lone wolf” attacks by militants who self-radicalize online."

Source:www.krank.ie...

The timing is interesting,
Sarkozy wants to pass a proposal, it's near election time, and this guys trial falls just right. Convict him of dealing with an "alleged" organisation, cause a stir of unrest that terror attacks are being plotted in your country, use it to get reelected, and pass a proposal taking away peoples freedoms to go where they want on the internet.

Sound familiar in any way? Or have I just gone too long without beer?

Who is the author of your map? It appears they have incorrectly indicated US presence on the island of Hainan and omitted the US forces on Taiwan.

I dont think the worst case scenario is as bad as you think. Here is a pretty good write up on the worst case scenario if an experiment goes wrong and creates a black hole.

Im make an educated guess here, but even if explosives were planted in the ring and detonated during a test, I would think the destruction would still be localized just to Cern and its area.

My mom and I were just discussing the theory that CERN is a time machine...I understand what you are saying...I think these scientists are messing with something they don't understand enough and we might all pay.

Crazy thought, maybe he succeeded, and they went back and fixed it?????

OOOOOOR maybe he is from the future and failed??
