WAR: Huge Increase in Attacks on British Forces

British forces in Iraq have seen a massive increase of attacks on patrols and bases in space of a month. In another indication of the increasingly volatile situation in Iraq attacks jumped from only 7 in July, to 853 in August.

ATTACKS on British patrols and bases increased from seven in July to more than 850 last month as Iraq slides deeper into violence.

Latest figures show British soldiers also fired more than 100,000 rifle and machine-gun rounds during skirmishes in which it is believed more than 100 insurgents died.

The 8000-strong garrison in the south of the country, including a battalion from the Black Watch, experienced more hostile contacts in four weeks than any British units since the 1951-53 Korean War
