From the polling company

An Impending Armageddon?

One in seven (14%) agree ‘the world will come to an end during my lifetime’ – 4% strongly, 10% somewhat – while the rest of the world (86%) disagrees – 66% strongly, 19% somewhat.

Th real believers are much smaller than you might think at first. Only 1 in 25 think strongly on the subject.

To me, this is the most important bit:

"An international sample of 16,262 adults aged 18 to 64 in Canada and the U.S. and adults aged 16 to 64 in 19 other countries was interviewed between March 6 and March 20."

So 9% of those 16,262 asked. Problem is I can't see anywhere what the question was that was asked. The way it is asked makes so much of a difference.

For example:
1. Do you think the world will end in 2012?
2. Do you forsee life on earth continuing in 2013?
3. What are your main goals in 2013?
4. Do you not think the world will carry on as normal as a result of the forecasted events of 2012?

You get my drift anyhow.

Whenever I see these adverts on TV, usually shampoo or something, where 80% of people agreed. In small writing it will say something like 250 people surveyed. That means 20% didn't agree or 50 people.

Statistics can say pretty much what you want them too.
The headline could have said "Apocalypse My Arse; 91% of Canadians Don't Think The World Will End in 2012", but that's not nearly as much fun.
