Gingrich to exit presidential race next week

Just coming across the wires now.

NBC News confirms that Newt Gingrich will suspend his presidential campaign on Tuesday, May 1 in Washington, DC, a senior campaign source says.

After a four-hour meeting last night, the former House speaker has decided to end his run. Tuesday was chosen for logistical reasons so his family can come up to the area and so forth.

There is a "high likelihood" he will endorse the GOP nominee at Tuesday's event.

Details as they become available.

Cannot say this is much of a surprise with the financial trouble his campaign has been in lately.

How do you think this will effect the Republican nomination now?

UPDATE: From CNN...

Newt Gingrich will officially end his bid for the Republican presidential nomination and formally express his support for Mitt Romney next week, two sources close to Gingrich tell CNN.

BREAKING: Gingrich to end White House bid

Now CNN is stating he WILL endorse Romney.

Good. Now if we can get Romney to step down, we'll have a real candidate.

Ron Paul 2012

Catch this nugget from CNN?

It is not surprising that Gingrich is suspending his campaign for the White House as he has all but acknowledged it is winding down and Romney is the presumptive GOP nominee.

"When he says he is transitioning, what he means is that he is trying to determine as a citizen how he will pro-actively help Mitt Romney become president and the Republican Party win back the Senate and help (House Speaker) John Boehner keep his majority in the House," said one of the sources, who spoke on the condition of anonymity.

BREAKING: Gingrich to end White House bid

Once again the American people say, "What about Ron Paul?"

And the media says, "< insert sound of crickets right here >".

So typical.

Considering Romney got the nomination last nite

what was the point of staying in?

Newt has some good points but was never going to be Potus.

Ron Paul just guaranteeing another 4 more of the great big O.

and Carter more or less endorsed Romney

we are screwed.

Why does he need his family there? His campaign is flat broke, and massively in debt, and he's putting on yet another expensive, flashy campaign event to announce that he's quitting?

With a campaign this much in debt, why doesn't he just put out a press release?

Gingrich has been hitting Obama hard on his lack of fiscal Conservatism and then pulls something like this?

Romney did not "Get the nomination". He still hasn't secured enough votes.

It IS pretty much a sure thing, but he's still quite a long way from getting enough delegates.
