100,000 British women mutilated

As many as 100,000 women in Britain have undergone female genital mutilations with medics in the UK offering to carry out the illegal procedure on girls as young as 10, it has been reported.

Research suggests that every year up to 6,000 girls in London are at risk of the potentially fatal procedure, and more than 22,000 in the UK as a whole.

According to Forward, a charity which campaigners against FGM, an estimated 100,000 women in the UK have undergone mutilation.

Known as "cutting", the procedure is traditionally carried out for cultural reasons and is widespread across Africa.

It is thought to be needed as proof of a girl's "purity" for when she marries, but victims are rarely given anaesthetic and frequently suffer long-term damage and pain.

Supermodel Waris Dirie, who was mutilated as a child, is a vociferous opponent of the practice.

Calling for a crackdown on FGM, she said: "If a white girl is abused, the police come break down the door. If a black girl is mutilated, nobody takes care of her. This is what I call racism."

It is interesting that the Somali model Waris Dirie frames female genital mutilations in terms of racism.

Are the British police racist, are they indifferent or is it that such crimes are hidden and rarely reported by the immigrant communities?

Same here in South Africa with circumcisions, a great number of young boys have lost the family vegetable because of botched backyard opperations.

The Zulu King called for all the locals to go to their nearest clinic where they can get the procedure done free of charge.

Problem Solved.

You cannot change culture, but you can change the way you go about it, especially for the benefit of your fellow man.

That is a good idea. Female genital mutilations however involve removing the clitoris if I am not mistaken. Why any group of people would do that to a women is beyond me.

I think it is only Black women of African descent and it is apparently often the mothers and grandmothers who force young girls to have the procedure.

It beggars belief that a mother would do this to their daughter but there you go. Culture.

This is a topic that I've been interested in, or should I say concerned about since I first saw a news story on it on CNN back in the early 90's. Someone asked if it's only done on black women and the answer is no. Egypt is one country where it used to occur, but a law has recently been passed banning female circumcision. I find it a bit disturbing that the name has been softened to 'cutting'.

There is a high number of British girls and women who are subject to this simply because of their cultural background. I read an article about a year ago that talked about teenage girls of Pakistani descent being brought back to Pakistan during the summer holidays and being subjected to this.

Of course it's illegal in the UK and *hopefully* in Canada and the US. I wish I could remember where I saw the article. I'll look for it on line. The argument was that this is 'cultural' in Pakistan and if the parents could not get their preteen daughters circumsised in the UK, then they would just have it done when they are in Pakistan for the summer.

I'm not sure of all the countries that this happens in, but from memory, it's done in northern Africa and parts of the subcontinent.

I just read the article and saw that medics in the UK are performong this procedure.

Who are they and where are they allowed to do this???????

Its a part of some African cultures, never heard of it being done in Pakistan or anywhere else but I could be wrong.
Ive read Waris Diries book "Desert Flower" and the account of her mutilation is horrible, it was done with a dull rusty razor and was sawn off rather than sliced.

Ive heard of Australian doctors doing this and while I personally find it disgusting the docs rationale was if they didnt do it hygenically in a surgery the family would do it in the backyard so to speak.

Western countries really have 2 options, let the mutilation be done by a dr or take the girls away from their families.

To be honest Im not sure which is worse, all I can say is thank god Im not an African woman

female mutilation/clitorectomy = less or no orgasms=frustration= equals control by male partner

these practices were set up and instituted by the original patriarchs
in order to depose and destroy the previous matriarchal paradigm

it only takes 3 or 4 generations for the memetic virus to spread on its own

I suppose now the uk can be added to the list even though the practice is forbidden by law. I would be inclined to believe the practice is performed in many other countries as well, yet to be exposed.

If a male is circumcised, he can still enjoy sex.

If a girl has her clitoris removed, to the best of my knowledge, she finds it almost impossible to orgasm.

Male circumcision and female "circumcision" are often not the same thing. Mutilation is often a more correct term for what some young girls are forced to suffer. Sometimes a fairly clumsy complete removal of the clitoris and surrounding areas is performed with no anesthetic and no sanitary conditions. A piece of broken glass is also used as the surgical implement sometimes.

If males were to undergo the same treatment, we would be um...well, pretty empty down there with at least most of the sensitive parts being cut off.

ETA I should add that I am sure the linked article is a sensationalist piece and view the figures reported with much scepticism.

Many would call it cultural but its really nothing more then their natural savagery coming through.

The purpose of female genital mutilation is to cause the woman no joy or even pain during sex.

If sex is painful, or at least unenjoyable, then women will be less tempted to stray from husbands. Ergo, female genital mutilation is a way that men in the society can keep their women "chaste.". In other words, mutilation is the modern day chasity belt.

It's a barbaric custom carried out by women b/c it's the only thing they know to do.

You are right, this "operation" is to remove any pleasure from the act of love-making.
It is also thought to encourage fidelity as there is no longer a desire for sexual pleasure.
And yes, this does give males more authority over women.

While I am usually a proponent of aboriginal cultural practices this is one I just can't stomach.
While the UK police may be slow to react to this it is probably due to cultural cliques that do not allow strangers information regarding who and where these practices are done.

this isn't just a crime against an individual, but against future generations of victims
in perpetuation of a long line/chain of past generations of victims stretching into antiquity
