I have absolutely no idea what this thing is. I thought the great minds here might be able to give a stab at it.
I was just skimming over craigslist when I stumbled upon it. I kept going back and finally decided to post it here.

Maybe if you know what it is you could contact the poor guy and help him out.

edit on 22-4-2012 by Doodle19815 because: Had to change the misleading title for mwood. It did say "Can you name a random object".

It does seem to be in a pretty fancy box for just a piece of a firearm. Unless there are certain pieces that are that prized that they get their own box?

It looks like a brake lever for a centre lathe.

The case looks like a old gun cleaning kit case.

The listing says it's from Antioch, the same place as the holy hand-grenade...... so maybe its for killing rabbits? Rabbits with nasty big pointy teeth?

Seismograph?

It's a part of something. It doesn't look complete. Looks to me like the other half is out there somewhere and when put together is worth more than $100. Otherwise they wouldn't be asking $100 for a piece of something. Notice the hole to the right of the serial # ? That could be a clue to as to what it is.

If I were you I'd ask the poster who is selling it.

Good eye, I missed that. There does seem to be a slender object in the top left of the bottom box.

You could very well be right! Do you have a link that would point this out? I tried to google it with no success. I thought I might pass it along to the poster.

OH, you mean identify a random objet......
When you asked me to name one I was going to say: Lottery Ball!

It appears to be part of a scope mount for a WW2 surplus rifle. You can see the indentations in the sides of the box for the scope to sit in ( half circles)

They came packaged in wooden boxes and were surprisingly good quality optics, at least the Russian ones were.

Point well taken. With a giggle I shall proceed to fix my misleading title. That is what I get for rushing after I hit the enter button way to soon.
