A member of ETA warned Spanish authorities they had planted two bombs on power pylons in separate areas of Spain. Authorities quickly found one in the province of Guipuzcoa and disarmed it, but are continuing to search for the second, believed to be in Aragon. Spanish authorities fear this is a new tactic by the ETA to target infrastructure.

Spanish police blew up a bomb placed on a electricity pylon and hunted for another device on Saturday after ETA Basque guerrillas said they had planted them, in what appeared to be a new tactic to hit power infrastructure.

A caller claiming to represent ETA telephoned a Basque newspaper saying the separatist group had put bombs on two high- tension electricity cable pylons run by grid operator Red Electrica , police said.

The caller did not say when the bombs would explode.

Apparently the bombs are targetted to disrupt power flow from France into Spain. A spokesman for Red Electrica, the Spanish power company, stated he did not think a major disruption would occur if the second bomb exploded before authorities could find and disarm it.

I'd say that there is more terror in knowing that there is a bomb that is about to go off, and then having it go off, than there is in just having it go off. But I would think that that depends on the people.

Also, consider this, the spanish public have demonstrated that they will listen to threats, as in the recent election. ETA knows that the socialists are already inclined to give more independence to the basque, and are not interested in becoming embroiled in domestic warfare. So ETA plants a bomb, which terrorizes everyone, but they give them enough time to find it, so the public will be scared and sympathetic to the basque. If the bomb or bombs go off, well, they are a terrorist org anyway. Also, notice the difference between the madrid train bombing, where regular citizens were the target, and this instance where a power companies' infrastructure is being attacked (people tend not to gather in large numbers on electrical power transmission equipemet). IOW, they're 'nice terrorists'. Leave it to the spanish to come up with something so 'absurd' and 'surreal'. Seems like there is a little of don quixote in there too no?

Well I've been reading the bbc news site and its said that the said that Basque group warns of new attacks and looks like they have already started it. " But the group is thought to have been weakened following a series of high-profile arrests" but also looks like there just shoutng out to say were are still here and prepared to fight?

BBC NEWS

The Basque separatist group, Eta, has said it will continue its violent campaign for self-determination for a region in the north of Spain.
Three masked and armed militants made the announcement in a video received by a Basque pro-independence newspaper.

They said they were fighting for the Basques' right to decide their own political future.

Talking of the bombs on the power lines, what happened to the bombs they put on some train tracks months back? I think it was the same group. I remember one bomb was found but there was more I think.
