A metaphor is a literary figure of speech that describes a subject by asserting that it is, on some point of comparison, the same as another otherwise unrelated object. Metaphor is a type of analogy and is closely related to other rhetorical figures of speech that achieve their effects via association, comparison or resemblance including allegory, hyperbole, and simile.

These folks are not stupid enough to think he meant that as a threat.

The Obama campaign needs to reimburse the taxpayers all costs associated with this bit of contrived drama. There is not a doubt in my mind they were ordered to do this as part of the campaign.

I guess this stuff works on some people, but then fools are born every day.

Yes we know what he meant. He clearly meant that as a metaphor for winning the election. Most of us are sophisticated enough to understand a metaphor from a well known person who uses them all the time. Being disingenuous about that is like any other lie.
