Hi all,

I was just reading a thread about the "Earth cracking up", six whole pages of salivating, mildly worry inducing fear porn, and I loved it.

I loved the Elenin threads.
I love the strange sounds threads.
I love the world war III threads.
I love the imminent alien invasion threads.
I adore the thousands of "humanity is doomed" 2012 threads.

You get the picture.

Anyway, in the Earth cracking up thread, one insightful and honest poster highlighted the fact that many who were contributing to the threads were in it for the fear and I realised that this was, in fact, myself. Why? Well, it is that tiny hit of adrenaline that hits when you consider the possibilities of utter destruction, or major destruction. I guess it is also the excited anticipation of something new and unexperienced that makes me want to read on, to visualise and dream of such movie like happenings that, in all probability, will never occur.

I am an addict.

I check this site, and others, looking for my next hit. I watch the MSM wwaiting for the next disaster to detract from my hum drum everyday life. This is not to say that I dislike my life, quite the reverse, I am well educated, own a house, have a loving family and a good lifestyle, my life is fine. But I am still addicted to fear porn.

Do I wish for countless lives to be lost or cast into terror? No, of course I don't, it would fill me with horror! It does fill me with horror, for example the boxing day tsunami or 9/11 both nearly made me weep, but I couldn't stop watching, waiting for the next "installment" of terror.

How many on here are fear junkies? Where is the line between being informed and prepared for potential eventualities and lapping up fancies of fear? How the hell do you kick this habit? Should it be kicked?

Is ATS denying ignorance or is it cooking up the internet equivalent of crystal meth?

My name is Dan, and I am addicted to fear porn.

P.S. Sorry Mods, I have no idea how this ended up in Fragile earth, could you move to Rant (I guess) please?

Hey Dan. I'm Jack, and I am with you. Never quite thought of it the way you have put it, but it is absolutely true. I come in here everyday for my shot of "fear porn".

I love it too. I really like to read how other people perceive certain events. It never ceases to amaze me how many people can see the same things or experience the same things, yet they view them in a completely different way.As my mom always says....It takes all kinds!

Me too!

But really if you think about it, that's what everybody does with newspapers, magazines. Everyone loves to revel in the doom as long as they are not involved.

One of my best friend and I always want to see a plane just fall out of the sky. Ideally the plane would have no passengers or pilots

Humans are sick

ETA: If I have triggered some sort of alarm to a terrorist monitoring group because I typed something about a plane falling out of the sky, I would like to take the time right now to tell them to go jump in a lake.

This is humorous, but, also a little disgusting.
It's attitudes like this that give all the little boys and girls crying wolf the coin of validation they need.

I'm with VVV; take up skydiving.

The less people that pay coin to all the perpetrators of false news that are smoke-screening the field with utter nonsense, the more we can get down to finding and seeing the really scary stuff.

Nice to meet you Dan.

Please excuse the obvious lack of fear on ATS right now. Im sure it will ramp over time, but it seems our doom prophets are asleep at the wheel at present.

Just because we are addicted to fear doesn't mean we are not able to discern between real and fantasy. What is in this post that gives credit to the made up crap? .

Look at my mood:
'' Men In Black-like''.
Fear of total destruction does not affect me anymore. ET abduction stories, solar flares... can't scare me, I've seen it all (almost) since years.
I guess time will take care of eroding your passion for fear, as it did for me.

The implication that you contribute to those threads on a regular basis thus giving attention to those that are essentially seeking just that while muddying the waters with their own selfish need for a spotlight.

No customers = no business.

Participation and contribution to such = 'paying' customers and encouragement for the wolf criers and chicken littles to continue dancing the dance that gets them an audience.

Admittance is the first step to recovery. So if you ever decide to take that step, you're already halfway there.

Depending on how you look at it, this really isn't a bad addiction. It is undoubtedly one of the easiest addictions to satisfy. You can find it everywhere. You don't even have to look for it. Millions of people all around the world, are pushing it at you 24/7.

Cool observation dude. I have to admit, I am on the same boat. Although, I am now living consciously and understand so much more about the meaning of life and what is happening on this planet, I still find myself digging for the fear. The bigger the doom the better the rush. I feel that this is a phenomena was birthed from the sick and twisted programming we are all put thru on a daily basis. We harbor a diseased way of thinking that subconsciously makes us craves misery, fear and suffering.

However, since I woke up, my craving for doom has mutated. I am no longer wanting doom just for the adrenaline. Now I want it, just to see it burn. This supermodel, six-pack-ab, lemon scented, infomercial-game-show-sitcom that we live in, is F-ING WARPED. And since people want no part of the responsibility it takes to change it on their own, they are "way to busy" for any of that non-sense), we are in dire need of a beat-down, so that we can re-set this diseased society and rebuild it with a clean slate.

oh how I count the days until the kill shot sequence begins...Bring on the MEGAAA-DOOM!

aa buddy of mine mentioned the kill shot the other day, and I am quite certain that i suffer from pre-traumatic stress disorder. as a child of the 70's and 80's i grew up with the Mutually assured destruction doctrine hanging over my head. as helpless as it all seems at times, as one with kids, i hope for the best for humanity. it certainly does seem that everything is way skewed though, how long will we need to let our militarys continue to invent new and better ways to kill US?

Alas, I too am an addict. I originally, and still do, came to this site for the conspiracies, but now also look for the 'end of the world' threads. It is our nature to slow down at car accidents or say 'that is a shame' at destructive news stories.

Even though I am an addict, I also don't think I will be giving it up anytime soon. I will allow that part of the human animal out but will also try and keep it on a leash.
