The story is more or less based on the kinds of intrigues European royal houses engaged in in the middle ages in order to secure their thrones, of course the kingdoms in the books are fictional.

You would expect nothing less than rape, murdering children and incest because it definitely happened in real life in Medieval times!

Well, the truth of the matter is that i'm a fan of the book because it portrays a rather realistic medieval world.

But, as was said, keep reading. It gets better. My impression of Jamie Lannister at the beginning was that he was your typical spoiled narcissist, but after the first book he starts developing into a tragic hero type with more character than the rest of his family [excepting Tywin], and is now my favorite.
