Most of the movies that are coming out today are absolute CRAP! Its more about money then it is art, just like the music industry. So with that in mind what are some GOOD movies, not avatar, transformers or any other extreme marketed movies. Not mindless action special effect bull #. I am not looking to waist 1hr of my life on pointless entertainment. I tend to like sci fi movies the most. Movies that make you think and expand your mind into a different way of thinking, a different point of view. Leave out the obvious, matrix, they live ect...

You like Sci-Fi?

The friend I'm hanging with right now loves "under the radar" Sci-Fi flicks. I asked him for a recommendation for you and without hesitation he said "Dark Star". Apparently it's some sort of cult classic Sci-Fi comedy.

In the far reaches of space, a small crew, 20 years into their solitary mission, find things beginning to go hilariously wrong.

IMDB: Dark Star

One that he turned me on to that I really did like was "Forbidden Planet" from 1956. One of the earliest made Sci-Fi that didn't look totally cheesy.

A starship crew goes to investigate the silence of a planet's colony only to find two survivors and a deadly secret that one of them has.

IMDB: Forbidden Planet

Watch Primer - great thinking person's movie... indie film that cost a few bucks to make:

Primer - IMDB

Agree with the Equilibrium recommendation above.

Watch Dark City if you haven't seen it. Simply Awesome.

If you really like Sci-Fi the best stuff is on paper...

Start with the Jaunt by Stephen King, it is most excellent.

One of my all time fav comedies. So overlooked too. I think it's Robin at his finest and well I can't help but love Mr. Fight Club

I have a thread where I asked for suggestions on good, different sci-fi movies: Recommend me Challenging And/Or Different Sci-Fi . I didn't get a lot of recommendations, but I made a list of what I had seen in the OP. Might help you out.

Are you looking for movies from any particular time period or just good movies?
