On July 21, 1961, Virgil 'Gus' Grissom flew the Liberty Bell 7, better known as 'Friendship 7,' becoming the third man, second free man, in space. While the capsule lay in the ocean, waiting to be picked up by a helicopter, the hatch blew. LB7 sank, and for years was at the bottom of the ocean, and was only recently recovered.

If you've ever watched The Right Stuff, which otherwise was a perfect movie, Grissom gets a lot of crap for it, and really ends up with a tarnished record for something never proven.

Anyway, I'd like to know what a number of intelligent think and feel about this. Most everyone I know is completely ignorant of any of the mercury-7 other than John Glenn, and they don't even know who he is.

I personally feel he didn't. The hatch was new for his ship, and as we all know NASA in the early days didnt do so well with new stuff. Every other astronaut ended up with a bruise do to the amount of force required to blow the hatch, Grissom had no such bruise. I'd go on, but I'd rather leave room for disagreement, because, after all, there is never proof of anything of this nature.

I've a collection of a few links that support my opinion. Unfortunately, the only sites I could find proposing he did in fact blow it were ones that debunked the theory. If any of you know of some, they'd be much appreciated.

ps - i do know this could belong in conspiracies, but forgive me for posting it here; i think the wealth of knowledge on this subject is far more concentrated here.
