There was no bribing involved. The Argies were just being bitter and acting childish by wanting everything that didn't belong to them.

Personally I think it's insane that we "own" an island so far away from the UK and that it should be handed back. (in the same way that Hong Kong was not so long back.) But at the same time I also think what's more important than anything else is what the majority of the people on the island want. Anything else should be less important.

Why don't Argentina and the UK get together to carry out a vote of everyone on the island to decide what they want, then just shut up about it? Probably because then it'd be decided and they wouldn't be able to cause a lot of tension and make people think about yet another insanely stupid war, whilst at the same time clogging up the media with yet more garbage instead of focusing on the mess they're currently making of the planet.

Because its outcome is a forgone conclusion. Everybody that spends more than a few moments reading into it knows the Islanders want to be British, they are British. Argentina wants the Islands due to a misplaced entitlement based on geographical proximity. They don't give a hoot about the opinion of the people living there.

What they should have done is parked the sovereignty issue and taken up the oil development collaboration deal they were offered. The good relations and intermingling of population that would have come from that would have delivered them the islands eventually.

They rejected it because as a running sore its more useful as a distraction from national scandals and incompetence.

1.The islands were discovered by an Englishman and claimed in the name of her Majesty.

2.Argentina was never even a country when the islands were discovered and being inhabited.

4.The Falkland islands are one British territory that was never invaded or brought under imperalism in the typical way we think Britain does it.

Thanks, had no idea of that, makes me feel a bit better about the whole thing actually.

Yeah can imagine that being the case too, like I said further back. There's no way this is all about the UK being wrong, there's more to it. Wouldn't be surprised if the governments of Argentina and the UK get together every now and then when they're having a bad time and "arrange" for more crap to start coming out in the news either. (although I admit that's maybe pushing it a bit far.)

Well maybe because the oil near the island isn't in Argentinian water but is off of the Falklands which is British.

The oil is 100% British.

Why then are they bribing Argentina?

i suppose that this could be settled quite easily we agree a date and say to argentina you have 3 weeks from that date to capture the islands and if not you become a british protectorate and if you fail well tough as most americans will tell you might is right and if you didn't have the might you don't have the right

Agree with Robhines, whether we like it or not, it will be handed back to Argentina at some point, that is inevitable.
Very similar case to Hong Kong. So let's get around the table and discuss this.

With something like this, I would expect the MPs from each country to be talking to each other and be telling us people a completely different story. Prior to the Falklands, Argentina had reasonably good relations with UK but that is a separate story.

Well let's just hope it's done peacefully if so, because most of us living in the UK and USA don't want anything to do with an "Imperial Empire". And if BRICS bomb the crap out of us screw them too because they're no better if innocent people are getting caught up in it.

You'd think these leaders would have the brains to settle things peacefully after over 2000 years, but apparently not. You could probably get a group of people the same size as the world leaders from anywhere in the world randomly and get them to settle something peacefully in a few minutes if need be. But not these people, even with over 2000 years. Waaay too many selfish interests to keep on the go.

The way things are going, especially with the internet and all the hacker groups at the moment, they'll just get exposed sooner or later anyway. Then we'll see the whole thing seriously unravel, and the truth of it will probably be hard for any of us to stomach. I mean it's getting to the point that the reality we already know of is hard to take, that's not including most of the stuff they're doing behind the scenes.

It's so selfish, especially when you add that it's been happening for thousands of years, that it's just sad really.

Following Argentine logic, that geographical proximity is a good claim to territory, the UK can claim Norway.

Yes. I want BRICS vs Imperial Empire.

I want America and Britain to die.

I want to live in a world where the BRICS control the Reserve Currency and dominate world affairs. It will be in our lifetimes.

This is just silly. Look at the history.

The current United Kingdom position remains the same and regards the right of the islanders to self-determination as "paramount".[53][54]

That the British were the first to claim the islands in 1690 and have never renounced that claim.
That the islands have been continuously and peacefully occupied by the UK since 1833, with the exception of "2 months of illegal occupation" by Argentina.
That Argentina's attempts to colonise the islands in 1820–33 were "sporadic and ineffectual".
That the islands had no indigenous or settled population before British settlement.
That in an Argentine-inspired poll in 1994, 87% of the island's population rejected any form of discussion of sovereignty under any circumstances, preferring to remain British.[55]
That the principle of uti possidetis juris "is not accepted as a general principle of international law".
That UN General Assembly resolutions calling for negotiations "are flawed because they make no reference to the Islanders' right to choose their own future."[55]
The European Union Treaty of Lisbon ratifies that the Falkland Islands belong to Britain

This old chestnut......

Argentina will not attempt to regain The Falklands by military might again.
They are in a far worse condition militarily than they were back in '82, whilst despite what some may have you believe, we most certailnly aren't.

They will continue to try to influence world opinion with the constant stream of lies and propaganda.....and it seems 'we' have started to do the same.

This is nothing more than political rhetoric.

If the poms care so much about the people of Falklands they should give control of the island to the people that live there.

They are very much as in charge of their own affairs as any of us are.

Perhaps a look at this will help you.
www.falklands.gov.fk...

They also dont want to lose all that cash they will make from the oil in the region.

The UK offered Argentina a full and equal share of all mineral development rights etc found in the Falklands Islands Territory and offered to build an onshore oil refinery on the Argentinian mainland.
This was despite having no legal or moral obligation to do so.

This would have provided much needed jobs and investment and would have been a massive boost to the Argentinian economy.

For some reason, which seem pretty obvious to me, Kirchner turned down this very generous offer.

Seems to me like classic deflection tactics and that she's putting her own personal ambition on the international stage ahead of the interests of her own people.

Alone Argentinia doesn't have the capital, knowledge or skill to extract one barrell of oil let alone billions.

I hope Argentina does invade

So you would like to see the deaths of ordinarly people, regardless of nationality, just to feed your pre-conceived dislike of 'imperialists'?

What right do the British have?

The UK has the only legal and moral right there is.
There has been a permanent British settlement there since before Argentina came into existence, they have never owned it or had a permanent settlement there.

Do you believe in The Right To Self-Determination?

If so then I suggest you respect the wishes of The Islanders who almost unanimously wish to remain part of the UK.

Imperialists

The only Imperialists here are the Argentinians who wish to impose their rule on a land they have never owned and a people who don't want them.

What i find laughable is that someone who has a love for Adolf Hitler (Thats you) then goes on to state his hatred of imperialism. You just couldn't make this stuff up

So i will ask you for a third time, what do you call a hypocrite in Australia, as you are one.

Hmm, not sure about that one. I bet Lionel Messi could scramble an egg on his foot.

They should let Messi decide it anyway, probably has more brains than any of the politicians involved, and he's definitely got more skill.

Hahah! I laughed more at that than I think I have done all day. BRICS is Brazil, Russia, India and China. I know we might be good at fighting, but that's probably taking it a bit far!

I've read opinions that suggest that the now-decommissioned USS Kitty Hawk is being kept in fairly good condition in Bremerton and could be handed over to the UK in a matter of weeks. Of course, the US Navy says she's part of the reserve fleet and is stand-by mode for deployment if needed by the US.

the UK has allowed the Royal Navy to slip to a surprisingly low ebb. It's not something that history shows happening before to the current state.

And you think Hitler was an Imperialist? Thats what he was fighting. He was a National Socialist.

And we actually speak English here. A hypocrite is a hypocrite.

And your comparison is not apt. At all.
So Im not a hypocrite.

What do you call a moron wherever you come from?
