I can't stress enough how incredibly important this information is to everyone here and elsewhere so please give me a moment before you assume anything. The information I have is DOCUMENTED and verified by reliable scientific sources including data from the USGS.
Simple data set comparing seismic activity worldwide April 2011 and April 2012, you can verify it by going to rsoe-edis and internet archive/ way back machine.

Earthquake Count.......................2011.....................2012

Total All.................................... 48..........................199
M3.1 to 4.0.................................10............................22
M4.1 to 5.0................................ 14...........................80
M5.1 to 7.0..................................2............................34

Anyone have any idea how to make this look "normal", because I honestly don't want to believe it.

from what I gather, this little list is only for April of both years, comparing them. Interesting, but we have just had 2 massive quakes which have set off a load of other quakes. So I don't think we should be reading too much into it.

Er no, there have been thousands. The majority being 4+, 5+ and quite a few 6+ with about two or three 7+.

I'm pretty sure those numbers are.. made up. No source?

Someone will come along and post actual data, but just by watching this video you can easily tell there were more than.. wow 10 m3.1 - m4.0? Seriously?

Yea there's definitely been more than that.

Edit: I see it says APRIL 2011 / APRIL 2012, not in obvious way either.

Still, I'm pretty sure there were quite a few more quakes.. the Japan aftershocks lasted for months in great frequency alone.

Ok, that would make more sense.

Would be nice to see sources though, other than RSOE. So these numbers can be verified.

I don't doubt this is anything to worry about. For all we know, the rest of the months in 2012 will be much more quiet than 2011. There is just no way of knowing.

It's good these recent large eathquakes were not catastrophic.

Very interesting. You did forget one field though, 7.1 to 10.1. Not sure how many their are.
Did you add these numbers up yourself or did you get the information all ready added up from some other source? Very interesting numbers if they can be verified.
I think we had some EQs over 7.1 to 10.1 this month and the month is not over yet.

What am I missing here? How does 22+80+34=199? Why do I come up with 136?

So if that's wrong, I have to assume 2011 might not be correct either.

And indeed I was right. So......10 + 14 + 2 = 48

Okay, class dismissed.

here are some links to significants from 2009 - 2012
link to 2012 so far earthquake.usgs.gov...
2011 here earthquake.usgs.gov...
2010 here earthquake.usgs.gov...
2009 here earthquake.usgs.gov...
looks like the normal in each year are the same every year not seeing anything different to be honest. in other words cant see a pattern so far ?
Not unless you want to go over these figures and make something from them

I don't argue your numbers..although I would have used and presented the data a little differently. In fact, I did on the thread I started on a very similar topic.

I didn't write this to say that though...what I wanted to mention was that this is all important to note, but don't get too excited......this is only the beginning. There is so much more to come and in a short timeline as these things go. If we get worked up and panicky over what is happening today, we'll each be emotionally dead by the end of this or we'll be total basket cases.

Just pace those emotions.. lol.... It's a marathon, not a sprint and we have many many kilometers of bad road left to run. Heck.. We aren't even to the first hard uphill in terms of events turning nasty. Close...but we aren't in it for real yet. That's all just my opinion...and not a prediction. Just a statement of what I feel we can expect.

The OP is using very incomplete statistics. From April 1, 2011 to April 12, 2011 there were 730 earthquakes worldwide of 3.1 and greater.

Thanks for the thread. I follow the earthquake activity everyday as well. You figures need to be better defined. Japan has had close to 1000 5.0 or greater since 3-11-11. Mexico has averaged 2-3 aftershocks a day with magnitude of 4.0 or greater. When you get to the Fiji/Tonga region and the Samatra region there are equally as many per day. Australia and New Zealand have been very active as well and finally if you look at Iran, Turkey and the rest of that region they are moving constantly with medium tremors.

I think your post accurate in the %'s, just not accurate in the numbers of quakes per day.
