ussc.utah.gov...

1. 90% of Utah's population lives in an active earthquake zone

2. . If a 7.5 mag quake were to occur in the Salt Lake City area, about 7,600 people would die

3. If a 7.0 quake, up to 2,300 people would di

4. Utah has experienced many damaging quakes already but geologic evidence indicates larger quakes overdue.

5. Large Utah quakes are most likely ro occur in a fault zone about 100 miles wide north-south along Wasatch Front

6. Utah averages a magnitude 6 earthquake once every 15 -20 years.

7. in SLC alone, 30,000 old brick homes and masonry buildings would likely crumble and fall and should be reinforced ASAP. with steel per Utah Seismic Safety guidelines.

Since when has a 7,0 been a megaquake??

Our 7.1 in NZ was bad but it wasn't the end of days!!

A smaller quake than a 7.0 could do more damage than, say, the latest 8s, if it was in the wrong place, wrong location, wrong depth...

perhaps cuz has to do with 90% residents of the whole state involved in the 'active seismic' zone?

they said around 2300 people would die if 7 is that not mega enuf?

and about 7600 die if 7.5

both seem mega to me

but the 'megaquake' comes from the op YT video's Title, not me.

The only people I think that would cry over utah suffering a crippling disaster are the mormons and romney crying over 7600 votes GONE.
like that. you would figure with all our super advanced technology we would be able to turn salt water into fresh water and place cities in strategically placed areas (not on major disaster possibilities) or replace our magnetosphere or actually predict when a 5 point or greater quake is going to strike. im kinda disappointed in our technology. we are not using it for good only destruction.

What a lovely sentiment, any other groups of people you feel the same way about? Armenians, perhaps or Turks. Maybe Indonesians? About 170,000 in 2004 there...so no point in worrying about THEM, eh?

Oh...and by the way, not everyone living in Utah is Mormon. But maybe there will be tears for them??

It's true that if we (all of us, Mormons and non-Mormons alike) experienced a 7.0 or above, things would not be so good. A lot of building has been going on in areas where the shaking would be likely worse than near the bench areas of the Wasatch.

But we're due, that's for sure.

Next Tuesday, April 17th is Utah's Great Shake-Out...the largest earthquake drill in the history of the state. We're preparing...and hoping we never need what we're learning! But I fear we will!!

Prayers and thoughts for EVERYONE who has been impacted by the recent quakes. And for everyone else...stay safe!
