You guys are derailing from the OP, this is about the new EQ around Indonesia not about Japan.

On another note:
All Tsunami warnings have been cancelled but local authorities are keeping their internal warnings in place for the time being! (-- that's what my local news is reporting --)

Can anyone confirm this further?

Well in view of recent earthquakes in the area, it's relevant to the discussion ...no? Well it's really moot as the discussion has already devolved to a bickering and peeing match. So you think we should forget about Japan's activity as of late, and dismiss it offhand?

I was predicted that before two months, like many others stronger one ..

www.abovetopsecret.com...

Personally most dangerous time for very strong earthquake of M 7.5 + or M 8.0 + will be from 10 April to June 12, 2012 ..

To be more more precise from 20 April to 08 June, but others days in that time line are dangerous also ..

Very positive we will have strong seizmic activity worldwide in that days also volcanic activity, first days in May ..
Also big possibility for some "unusual" events ..

We will have super full moon at May 6 2012 ..

Last one was at 19. March 2011 of 356577 distance but we also have extreme solar activity from March 6 to March 11 .. Most dangerous location will be area of USA-West Coast, Japan to Indonesia, PNG to Fiji, Alaska, from Iran to Italy and of course all area of "Ring of Fire" ..

Possibility to have stronger earthquake in all of this areas, mostly ..

I'm not suggesting that. What I was trying to say was that it appeared as though there was an argument taking place on a thread that was meant to be to notify us about what just happened.

Glad I caught onto this event via ATS or otherwise, I would not have known or cared. It's sad but true.

That being said, I'm watching this event unfold.

tsunamis travel at ~500mph on the open ocean this varies greatly depending on depth, the shallower the water the slower it moves. given the first quake hit at around 10.30 (gmt), we guessed this morning they'd have around 40 mins to an hour before they would be hit by a tsunami. oh and the quakes epicentre was 375km from shore i think it was. so by the time all the warnings had been given it may have been 30 mins for people to evacuate. luckily there was no major tsunami.

Does anyone have the ability track the height of the peaks in the Himalayas? My bet is that the big quake of 2006 in the Indian ocean caused the height to drop. I'LL bet that with this latest activity the height has dropped even more.

Right now the sun virtually blank. The calm before the storm? OH, OH, Tonga is active.

That is a really good idea.

But the more I think about it, how could you measure them? you have to measure relative to something else, right? But if eveyrthing has moved...

If we say there's high activity in a very broad spectrum of time and very broad spectrum of area we prove nothing more than con artists using tarot cards. I guarantee an earthquake this year....hahaha

Well thankfully it seems as if there will be no tsunami, prayers and positive thoughts for all those in the area.

I must say bravo ATS, I have gotten faster updates and info on this here than any where else. And with all the hype and concern about earthquakes lately ( this is a well founded concern I do believe) its seems that the average user is becoming more educated and knowledgable about earthquakes and siesmac events.

Way to go in Denying Ignorance guys

As I said before lets pray for those affected today and any others that may fall in harms way due to the increase in (reporting at least) earthquakes and siesmic events.

Praying and Positive

For anyone that's just found out about this :

The earthquake off the coast of northern Sumatra in Indonesia began with a sudden shift in a strike-slip fault, a line of weakness in the seafloor where two huge bodies of rock can slide past one another.

Unlike the earthquake that triggered the devastating 2004 tsunami in the region, the seafloor moved sideways instead of vertically, meaning it displaced less water and did not send giant waves around the Indian Ocean.

Why earthquake off Sumatra did not trigger a devastating tsunami

USGS latest earthquakes for the vicinity of the 8.6.

There has been an 8.2 aftershock along with multiple 5+s

Being as this is a logarithmic scale, the two large quakes together are nit much more than the initial quake:

The total energy of the 8,2 and 8.6 is the equivalent of an 8.665

I wouldn't rule out these strike-slip quakes causing a megathrust. Anything is possible.

It was a lateral shake.= less damage, less chance of tsunami.
As of now several hours later. No tsunami.

There have already been 18, 6.0 or higher magnitude earthquakes since the new year started

31 Mag 6 actually, 4 Mag 7 and 2 Mag 8 now. Perhaps you need a better data source?

Seems rather low to me considering that we have between 160 and 200 mag 6 every year. At 30 over 3 moths we are only going to make 120.

Same goes for Mag 7. Normally around 20 and on course for 12.

You can count the Mag 8's as they are few and far between.

RSOE EDIS Alertmap is going mental with the aftershocks. Check it out.

hisz.rsoe.hu...

All computer generated so I guess it may not be accurate but thats a log of major activity.
