Earthquake-report

- At this moment we can only tell that a real destructive tsunami has not yet occurred as far as we know. Additionally the epicenter is too far out of the coast to be shaking damaging. Light damage is still possible of course as the highest expected shaking is still a strong MMI VI shaking. - People in the most dangerous area are well prepared these days and were also immediately alarmed to seek higher ground - Many (powerful) aftershocks have occurred since the mainshock - India’s tsunami warning center said waves measuring up to 6 meters were expected along parts of its eastern coast

How many (and how brutal) aftershocks do we have to fear about ?
Seems to be like the man falling from the top of the tower : "up to now, everything's all right" ...

could be me, if someone else who is monitoring closer and can confirm this or not, would be helpful, as there is what seems to be an increase in 5.0 and up quakes in recent hours on the planet and seeing the rings of the mag. 8.2 and 8.6 in Sumatra, could be more action today, and in coming weeks, is logical guess, so will continue to monitor

Had a good size one by the South Sandwich Islands a bit ago. I hope this helps you...

AFP: The Indian Tsunami Early Warning Centre issues a red high-level warning for the islands, which lie north of Indonesia in the Bay of Bengal, about 1,600 kilometres (990 miles) from the Indian mainland.

Geoscience Australia specialist Daniel Jaksa tells AFP "there's definitely tsunami signals reaching the Sumatran coast" Jaksa: "Fifty centimetres can be quite dangerous. You only need about 20 centimetres to lift up a car and make it move, so this is not insignificant"

Reports of another aftershock hitting twitter now too!

Has anyone on the board claim they predicted this quake or had a dream about it yet?

All I know is, I woke up around when the first one hit, with an excruciating headache. I woke again when the second one hit, with an even worse headache. It was so bad, I almost threw up, had to get up and take excedrin. Pain so intense, I turned on the tv cuz sleep not possible. Thats when saw quakes happened.
Last time I woke with this situation was the Japan quake/ tsunami.

Who knows how we're affected. I live in California, near SF (east bay), on the Hayward Fault.

Pisses me off that when a natural disaster happens in an area outside of the USA, and is classed in a particular level, that it is then downgraded by America. But when it happens in the USA, they pump it up to apocalyptic level.

Japan Tsunami - Originally 8.9, USA wanted it downgraded - Japan said no, upgraded to 9.2 or whatever.

Australian Cyclone Yasi - Category 5 (Worst), USA/Some US backed Australian scientists wanted it downgraded, Australia said maybe.

Current Earthquake - Originally 8.9, USA downgrades to 8,7, then 8,6.

But when something happens in the USA. OMG it's the end of the world.

Regardless, i hope everyone remains safe in the events which follow.

NOTE: There are reports of an aftershock of magnitude 8.2, causing another tsunami warning.

If quakes half a world away give you those bodily results and you LIVE in CA.... you ought to move cause you should feel lousy on almost a daily basis...

I'm feeling quite nauseated right now and light headed. I have a sister in law on the Hayward Fault, and I was thinking of her just while ago. I too had a headache from hell the night of the Japan quake.

I agree Asala, so many people here with such a vast array of knowledge, apparently, but so few of them are prepared to put their money where their mouths are!

Basically if you have nothing to add to the thread why even bother reading it?

Give people like Puterman and Asala the respect that is their due!

I read the threads but seldom say anything because I know that there are much wiser people than myself whose opinion I appreciate!

Thanks to all out there who have added anything, no matter how small, of value to this thread!

So as I understand it, the USGS has said that the first quake was horizontal, and therefore not likely to cause a Tsunami, but that the second one was vertical but smaller?

So we are now seeing tsunami waves from the first quake, as people now head back down. When they could now be in danger from the vertical second quake that is apparently more likely to cause a tsunami than the first...

I think I would be camping on a hilltop until any waves from the second quake have been and gone. I certainly wouldn't be heading back down already.
