Women Trapped in a Mental Prison.

It seems fewer women are interested in conspiracy theories. It also seems fewer women are interested in subjects such as science, mathematics, and philosophy. How can women’s lack of engagement with conspiracy theories and these other subjects be explained?

Advertising, TV, Hollywood, glitzy magazines - they all portray a world and lifestyle that is infinitely glittering and seductive to many people.

Once people are slaves to the fake world, they never want to leave. They are addicts, with a desperate craving for the glamor so lacking in their real lives. The online world Second Life gives people the opportunity to create an idealized, fantasy avatar of themselves that inhabits the sort of world in which they would like to live for real. Are these Second Lifers the sort of people likely to be pursuing the truth, challenging themselves intellectually, breaking out of their 'mental prisons'? These people will never rebel or pursue knowledge as long as they get their fantasy fix. If you are getting things that you think you want, you have no feeling that you are anything but free, the bars of your jail are invisible.

In women's magazines there's never a word about science, history, economics, politics, philosophy, religion, technology. Conspiracy theories are never mentioned. Women's magazines are all about physical appearance, fashion, gossip and celebrities. Who's fat, who's thin, who's pretty, who's ugly, who's wearing what, who's up, who's down, who are the new stars, what are the old stars doing?

Women's magazines are the sanctification of trivia. They are devoid of intelligent thought. Sex and the City - one of the most popular women's TV shows of recent years - is a story of career women with expensive shoes. That's it! They moan about men, but are obsessed with getting Mr Right. After decades of feminism, women are still locked in a frivolous, intellectually sterile world.the perfect formula for neutralizing women: Give ordinary women a shop to visit and a credit card to brandish and they will be docile, obedient consumers, never posing any problems.

David Riesman said, "The other-directed person wants to be loved rather than esteemed; he wants not to gull or impress, let alone oppress, others, but, in the current phase, to relate to them; he seeks less a snobbish status in the eyes of others than assurance of being emotionally in tune with them."

Is that not a definition of most women? Is that not a description of most office workers? Is that not a description of users of social networking sites? We live in an other-directed society, one where most people are scared to deviate from the normal, the average. "Fitting in" is imperative. Few people have the courage to be themselves.

It is time to stop "Fitting In". Stop being normal. Women and men alike must start pursuing ourselves more intellectually. It is imperative that we advance forward as a species and this can not happen under the current circumstances of the world.. The world has become a shopping mall where everyone is compliant living in this fantasy and no one bothers to question the status quo or stand up for what is right. This is a call for change; a call for women and men and anyone absorbed by popular culture to WAKE UP and see what is going on around you.

The last thing those that have held the power want you to know is that you have the numbers, the intelligence, and the strength needed to do away with them forever. We don't need them anymore.

I will let you in on a secret. I am a woman, I love science, watching the news, hate the mall, own one pair of shoes, and could care less if anyone but my husband thinks I am beautiful. But that isn't the secret, the secret is I am not the only one. The are some who hide their individual nature but it is there all the same.I am woman I am smart, weird, strong and most of all I am not alone.

I respectfully disagree with your observations. Women are normal. Women have as many individual interests as men.

How can you even tell who is a woman or man on ATS. Sure some names, like mine, give an indication but it's hard to tell from most.

As for women's magazines - what about all those porn sites men visit? How about that for unrealistic fantasy!

i believe you are missing the point... it's not just women either, but it is primarily women who are subjected to Advertising, TV, Hollywood, and glitzy magazines. I have witnessed first hand how these things can challenge peoples ability to think, reason, and challenge the status quo.

And what about men and their silly magazines? What about their silly TV shows. Your sexism is showing. If you didn't want to single out women you wouldn't have made a thread about it.

Only middle and high school girls fit this description. Very few women are like this in the outside world.

As i have previously stated it is not just women, but in my opinion it is primarily women. That could be the reason why women less frequently challenge themselves in science, philosophy, mathematics, and politics. Even though there are more women in these fields today than there used to be, i still think society as a whole does not pursue knowledge near as much as it should/could as a result of all the things mentioned in the OP.

Agreed. SEX sells. I am sad to see them starting in on younger and younger girls to insure they develop a poor self image. If your fine like you are, you don't need to buy their product. Funny and sad observation anyone else notice all the commercials now for men. Spanks, weight loss, hair loss, perfume oopps I mean body spray. This thread was not a means of bashing women, it was my attempt of bringing to light some rather important modern issues in which people are brainwashed to a certain degree by media and other influences.. perhaps you should reread my OP and you will see the point..

I agree, i have noticed this recently myself. Hopefully, more people will start to realize the problem with the media and that we are all being brainwashed to some degree. I would like to see a society filled with brilliant thinkers who all challenge themselves intellectually. The world was once like this but as a result of the media people no longer think as they once did.. looking back on history there were so many brilliant thinkers; today we get people like steve jobs or bill gates at best

You sat there and generalized women, of course as a woman I'm going to be insulted.

But, even as a woman who is not like what you described, I completely understand why many women don't care about my interests. I got over the whole "everyone is a sheep" thing a long time ago. People just find it insulting and frankly, if they are happy not knowing, well then I don't care. Either way, you are preaching to the choir. This is ATS, not Cosmo. Most of the women here aren't likely to fit the bill you have presented. So what does this rant benefit? The people who "need" it won't see it and most of the women around here are just going to wrinkle their noses at your generalization.

Excellent point, i did consider that my post would not apply to most women on here because what would they be doing on a conspiracy site if they were not interested in this sort of thing.. but nevertheless, i still believed my thoughts on this subject were worth sharing.. I guess you could say im just trying to increase awareness on the subject.

I can see what you're saying up to a point. But I see men in a mental prison all their own. And equally so. Also, we do have some female members here who are "awake", and whose husbands don't have a clue.

I think at this point in time, the women in our society are "waking up" as fast as men are.

Something you should consider is that in previous generations women were only expected to marry well. They weren't expected to have a career or get a masters degree. The old ways are dying and women are free to want more for themselves.

My parents were older my father was born in 1919. Although my father taught physics at a major university. My interest in science was never encouraged and there was never any plans for me to attend college. This however couldn't stifle my desire to learn things my parents though were unladylike. The world has changed but the view of the world we are told is normal has not caught up completely yet. The media still plays up the old stereotypes.

I believe in time this too shall pass,

How old are you and where have you been?

You are not describing any women I know or have known since the early 60's.

I enjoy being a woman because I can have the best of the male and female world.

I can shop and buy very feminine clothes and enjoy wearing them.
But I can also go bogging in the woods with my big truck.

Riding my motorcycle a few hours makes me feel alive and steadies my soul.
The very next day I may crank up my sewing machine and sew a new dress I designed.

Now that it is getting very warm in the southeast I can take my boat and a few friends and go camping on the river.

I am free to do anything I choose to do that is branded as a male or female thing.

There is only one thing I can't do is write my name in the snow when I pee.
I know my limits as a woman and that was it.

It is obivious you have known very few real women.

I could go on and on about this but I need to clean my hand gun and then polish my nails.

I enjoy being a girl.

Please explain your avatar then? Why not some image totally androgynous instead, if you are so "enlightened"? There are countless women members on ATS who "talk the talk", but portray themselves as sexy and shapely female "warrriors" in their avatars.
