I like that as much as the next guy, but have you been on other forums where the freedom of expression has led to an endless stream of f bombs, racial slurs and flame warss? It really sucks. I think ATS moderates well, but we need to exercise decorum and our own judgement as well. If we enjoy this forum, we should protect it. If I'm at a party and someone gets ripped and starts trashing the place, I escort them out before they get the attention of the police and the party is forced to stop. I would rather self police than be slapped around by Big Sis.

I think shunning is a great way of self policing that has been used successsfully for centuries in many societies. Alert, warn, then ban, like is happening now. I think its alright to shut down a thread that has gone astray. I think it is alright to report a thread that threatens the free flow of ideas with a governmnet imposed fine or ban.

Arizona is already looking to JAIL people with opposing ideas because some forums have gone ape crap with racism, etc... I don't want ATS to be a victim of this kind of action.

ATS is, essentially, a self organizing collective. Occupy crapped out here in SLC because we couldn't police ourselves, we were too worried about the freedom of the druggies, prostitutes and criminals that chose to hide in our ranks. Our open mindedness was our downfall, like any true democracy. Self policing would have saved the movement. Our inability to do so opened the door to external policing, and we all know how that went...

Freedom of speech does not extend to the consequences of the content of your speech. You can say what you want to say, but you need to own the outcome.

I agree, but one thing, and maybe it should be in the boards forum, but it really chaps me that the mods put up this little "removed" sign instead of just removing the post. So many very good threads are closed and removed because of the stupid antics of posters. This is not fair to the OP nor is it fair to the thread or the serious posters that are truly interested in said thread. So much good information has been removed because of other people coming in and messing up the thread. Those "removed" signs the mods put up becom distracting and take up room on the thread. They take away from the thread just as much as the off topic or trollish posts. Just remove the post completely and leave the thread to those who can respect it. Thats my opinion such as it is.

Yes, I was behaving like that myself, at one point. Consider me a hypocrite now if you like. I realised that it was wrong; and that more specifically, fear of Islam, or whatever other group, is basically being used against people for the same purpose...to keep people divided, and to attempt to push society into a state of chaos.

I had been taught to think of Islam, specifically, as a threat; but then I started speaking to a couple of Muslims here, and also observing all of the other racist stuff that went on, and it made me realise, that the group in question really doesn't matter. It gets promoted by a government and media which, irrespective of the target, really just wants us to continue to hate. Said system doesn't care what the target of the hatred is...just so long as said hatred continues.

Once I realised that that was what it was, I not only stopped doing it myself, but realised that I needed to try and inform other people here who'd fallen for the same thing.

Yes, I said this. I've also got a father and younger brother, who've never had any control of their sexuality, either...and they are straight. The comment wasn't intended to single out homosexuality exclusively; there are plenty of heterosexual people who are likewise irresponsible.

Many abuse that responsibility. A perfect shield to "flames" is the truth, dignity, and an unwaivering apprach to any given topic.

Fight someone with THAT and if they continue to battle with lies, half-truths, vitriol and stupidity then they'll just be painting a very unflattering self-portrait.

Like I said; I have a younger brother who is paying child support, a father who is guilty of multiple acts of adultery, and an uncle who is a convicted paedophile. So you could say that I know something about the potentially harmful social effects of sexual irresponsibility. All three of them are straight.

I will repeat; the statement was not intended to imply that either side of the orientational divide had a monopoly on promiscuity or irresponsible behaviour. Both can.

I like the fact that people express what they feel and there is nothing wrong with telling the truth or expressing how you feel.

Hate is nothing more than a human emotion that is highly overrated.

To attempt to eliminate it from the world would be a major act in futility and very unrealistic.

You need hate in the world...for a world without hate is an unbalanced and unhealthy world.

Only a child or someone without worldly exposure could not understand its unique niche.

As with everything relating to human interaction too much or too little can upset a very delicate social balance.

I've only recently joined ATS, but I've been here for many years, and race was never an issue here. But, boy how things change. I'm all for free speech, but one must understand, as with any freedom, with freedom of speech comes responsibility. To disagree with an opposing viewpoint, in a civil manner, is one thing. But to totally direspect people with opposing viewpoints, and not expect any consequences, is not being responsible. And that goes for ANYBODY...black, white or deep purple.

I am changing myself. I'm also getting trolled, however, which is entirely predictable. I've made a similar thread to this before, and while people didn't accuse me of being a hypocrite, I still got trolled with the censorship angle. I've had someone else in this thread do that as well.

People just want things to stay the way they are, is all it is. They want to talk about how America is possibly going to collapse into a sea of anarchic, racist violence. They don't like it if someone tries to suggest that maybe they shouldn't do that. So if you weren't able to find ammunition from other things I've said in other threads, I'm well aware that you'd simply find another pretext for attacking me.

Why take that away from other people who need to learn? Shouldn't we teach by example, with our words? You can go ahead and designate yourself as the Official Vigilante for ATS, but you can't catch every comment on every thread.

Besides, free speech is important. If you disagree with somebody's post, I think it is a "teaching moment" in which you can point out the flaw in their thought process. Words are mightier than the sword, or snitching.

Don't be like those guys who break a bunch of laws, and then when they go to jail they suddenly find Jesus and verbally condemn everybody else for not being perfect.

The strength of your argument should elevate this website. Censorship will make people afraid to post how they really feel, and will do nothing to improve this site or its content.
