Toutatis. It will pass us by 4 LD, that's why no hassle about it. If it hit's us then it's a big boom.

You think they would actually tell us if they knew it was going to hit?

Not only would they not tell us if it was going to hit, they'd deny the knowledge of it after the fact. A spin campaign would be started saying it was just a celebration in North Korea.

Oh I have no doubt that they wouldn't tell us, but wouldn't they at least TRY something under wraps to stop it? A big rock heading for earth can't benift anyone, no matter how you put it

Also while I was typing my other post I did get an urge to watch Armegedon

Or a forestfire...
Anyway, It "appears" to miss us by 4 lunar distances.
What about gravity?
Ours and our moons?

I hate how the terra-centric internet media report this as if we're the victims here.
Note the obvious spin: "Toutatis may hit the Earth.."

When, in fact, it is our planet that is going to hit Toutatis.

And sure, many people may suffer or even perish, but we, and the planet will survive.

That poor asteroid has no hope of survival!

A 5 page thread has already been going about this particular "impact".

The thread has plenty of pretty pictures as well as flight paths posted.

Thread title: Asteroid impact September 29th 2004

Summary: Thousands of amateur astronomers with internet access (i.e. people with a telescope in their backyard) cannot be stopped from posting their observations on the internet. Unfortunately there is no credible evidence supporting the view that Toutatis will impact on 9/29.

Location of thread:

At the closest point of Toutatis' approach, if you imagine yourself sitting ON the asteroid, the Earth would appear about as large as a full moon. Save your anxiety for the war on terror, or the latest human-engineered hurricane.

Attack of the killer potato!

thats just a rendered image, but it IS very Spudlike in it's shape and appearance..

Here is also a small mpg file, showing the unusual rotation of Toutatis.
Spins like a badly thrown Football.

Despite what many people would like to believe, we have no method for stopping an asteroid impact. At least not one that we could deploy and rely on without decades warning.

So while this isn't going to hit us, even if it was what would knowing about it beforehand accomplish aside from causing mass panic?

Yes. You couldn't keep quiet every single astronomer (and amateur astronomer) on the face of the planet.
