Another uprising by Shiite Muslim cleric Muqtada al-Sadr's followers could happen if Iraqi authorities continue raiding his offices and detaining his followers. Top Shiite cleric Grand Ayatollah Ali Husseini al-Sistani brokered a Najaf peace deal with rebel cleric Muqtada al-Sadr about a month ago.

Earlier this week, U.S. troops raided al-Sadr's office in the southern holy city of Najaf and detained about a dozen people. The move angered al-Sadr's followers as well as Iraq's top Shiite cleric, Grand Ayatollah Ali al-Sistani, who said it violated a peace deal he brokered.

"This aggression is a serious precedent in the new Iraq and for the state which has thrown itself in the arms of the occupation," said sheik Hashim Abu Regheef in a sermon attended by hundreds of worshippers outside nearby Kufa Mosque.

U.S. and government forces "are trying to finish off this movement," he said.

The #es are threating civil war, the Sunni's are threatening civil war, and who's stuck in the middle? The US.

What do you do to stop a civil war? We can't get in the middle to make them stop shooting, they all want to shoot at us anyway.

All I can think of is to arrest the leaders of these seperate movements that want civil war, but this may not be the solution either.

No wonder it took someone lke Saddam to keep those tribes from civil war all the time.

We talk out of both sides of our mouths when it comes to the Iraqi people/tribes.

I don't remember anyone asking the U.S. to get involved there. We did it for our own reasons and because Bush said so. We shouldn't get any sympathy for our actions. The only sympathy I have is for the brave soldiers fighting over there, they are the only ones truly stuck in the middle.

What happened to the three-state solution to Iraq that was brought up in late '03?? It proposed dividing Iraq into 3 states with the Kurds in the north, the Sunnis in the middle, and the Shiites in the south. As more uprisings occur and violence continues to flare perhaps we should take another look at this proposal, but that would make sense.

No it wouldn't. A free kurdistan? Do you really want a war between Turkey and this new kurdistan? While at the same time having to deal with a shi'ite state and a sunni state glaring over the border at one another?

And here I thought Iraq was already in the midst of an uprising. What else would you call what's happening over there?
