Hmmmmmm.... I wonder if this is a direct correlation to how desperate people are, and more and more people kicking money into the SCAM, oops, I meant TAX, oops, I mean lottery? During good times people do not feel this urge to kick money into a pipe dream and use the money for tangible assets and or things that they need, want, enjoy. During economic hard times casino's and lottery amounts/expenditures seem to increase... I wonder what the next mega lotto amount will be? You do realize that you have a better chancem, statistcially, of getting mauled by a polar bear and grizzly all in the same day than winning the lotto???.....

I disagree, after some quick research ( Result history) It would seem even though this year it has started out massive these big numbers eventually pop up over time.

Thanks for bringing this up.

A friend and I have been discussing the statistics of lottery jackpots and their seeming improbablity. Jackpots on games that consistently reach stratospheric levels seems to be the norm, where just a couple of years ago that very rarely happened.

Let's take the latest Mega Millions drawing. The odds of winning the jackpot are 1 : 175,000,000. Now look at the weekly Prize Amount leading up to someone actually winning:

Mega Millions Winning Numbers

I don't know if there is a resource on the web to find out how many tickets were being sold before every drawing but the odds of a 1:175 Million odds lottery NOT having a winner for all those weeks seems absurd. (I hear that the latest Mega Millions drawing was selling 100 Million tickets an hour. And only three winners? Look at the odds again and apply the math.)

Coincidence? Or just state revenue-starved treasuries needing a boost?

I remember how the state of Minnesota got the lottery passed in the first place. Because the proceeds were to go to the Environmental Fund, thus getting passed on the ballot. Nowadays, all the proceeds go to the General Fund. If voters would have been presented with that scenario the measure would have gone down in flames!

Hmmmmm indeed!

In some States, I'm sure the income from lottery is the only way to take in money from non-tax paying freeloaders. I know that's the case in Georgia. When the lottery started here, it was sold on the idea of the funds only going to the schools/education system. That's not the case now. It's being diverted to whatever the people who can push their agenda want.

Do you know who started the lottery? The Mob, and It was called running numbers...and It was Illegal.

That should give you an Idea of how the lottery system works.
