Player X faced with reporters after a monumental flameout by the Toronto Maple Leafs at the end of the 2012 season, had this to say to the press, his employer and the fans:

I'd like to apologize to the fans for the way the team collapsed over the last twenty-five or so games. We only won a few of those games and I know that it is very disappointing for our fans, particularly since we were a contending team for much of the season. I can't speak for the other guys but I'm sure most of them feel the same way I do, which is . . . rotten.

I'd also like to apologize to my employer, who, along with the fans, pays my salary. I'm not going to give the money back but I feel like a # for taking it.

Finally, I'd like to apologize to Ron Wilson. A lot of the fans were calling for his head but I don't think that was justified. It is a team sport but no matter what a coach says, out on the ice, it is the players who have to react in any given situation. It is the players who have to execute and who have to adapt and react to the unexpected when execution is impossible. Ron Wilson coached a team that nobody expected anything of at the beginning of the year into a contender that entertained the fans and planted the seeds of hope in them for most of the season. A coach doesn't collapse in the last thirty games. Players collapse.

I want to assure the fans that in the off season, I am going to follow the advice of the team's trainers so that I will be in optimum shape for the start of next season. I will work on my game, mentally, because I feel that that was the weakest part of my game and maybe of the team's game this season.

I'm not a thief who is stealing money from the fans. I'm determined to help this team improve in every way that I possibly can. I hate losing and I'm not a loser. That's all I have to say.

Memo to MLSE and Mr. Tannenbaum:

Thanks. Now the "second season" (of armchair management, second guessing and post mortem examination of the corpse of this season) can begin.

"Go Leafs!"
