I find it highly offensive that you would suggest the information provided to me must first be filtered through your opinion of what is in my best interest.

As far as the "doom porn" goes, well... maybe someone here will read a "doom thread" and become motivated to be a positive force for change, public awareness brings with it the possibility of change, it has happened here before, think ATS and wild horses.

Much so called "doom porn" has came to ATS only to find a swift death as intelligent well informed members thoroughly debunked and buried it.

Perhaps someone on ATS has bumped hard against your opinion or even went so far as to bruise your ego...

But please... do not insult me by assuming you know better than I the information that is suitable for my consumption.

I don't need to know about corrupt police bashing people, children killing each other, people offering each other in human sacrifices, or whatever other graphic example of human depravity that you people are able to dredge up.

So what you are saying realy, is that you don't want to know about the true nature of reality? Maybe you should go watch fox news or something similar for your daily dose of head in the sand....

Why?

Because in the public imagination (insofar as it can be said to apply, that is), places like ATS occupy an ambiguous place - for many, not too far from supermarket-tabloid-level. This is changing, however, as people realize the MSM is no longer trustworthy and that we really do live in an era of massaged and manipulated news. Given that, people are looking at ATS and other “conspiracy” sites in a new light. We have the potential to bring back a little of the dignity that the MSM has tossed over its shoulder like a rusty tin can. But the fate of places like ATS hangs in the balance – will it become a serious news source or will it remain the “lunatic fringe” ?

They used to say journalists had a responsibility to elevate the public discourse, or at least to keep it from sliding into the gutter. This was connected with the idea that journalism is more than a job, it was a profession, if not an out-and-out calling. That is no longer the case, sadly - journalists are now shills. But as "citizen journalists," we must pick up the mantle that the shills have dropped. Part of this means we, too, have that same responsibility.

It's up to us.

I agree with you 100% OP. I always try and post in these threads lambasting the poster. I have a feeling most if not all of these posters do so for the stars and flags under the guise of "im just trying to show ATS how the world is." thanks, like we dont already know that there are sick and twisted people in the world. You wouldnt believe how many people reply like that, trying to defend their flag greedy ego's and mask it as something else. I started coming to ats to read the alternative news, the good stories/theories, the random ancient civilizations id never heard of, ect. If i wanted to read or watch goreporn i would go to liveleaks or the ogrish forums. But i dont because it is tasteless and IMO represents some sort of mental malfunction.
Thanks for posting this, now if we can only get this on thefront pagefor about a week.

People already know this. I fail to see how having disgusting storiea posted here is going to educate anyone to this fact as it is COMMON KNOWLEDGE. We dont read them. However, a majority of people use the "recent posts" link to see what threads are current and actively being discussed. It is in there that we see the headlines for these atrocious stories. The headlinez typically tell you everything you need to know about the situation, so we are not actively seeking these threads or reading them, but we have to be subject to reading these headlines, and thus basically the gist of the story, while searching for quality content.

This website used to be about interesting stuff, and lately we have had an influx of egotistical members in need or stars and flags who will post just about anything to get them. And they always reach for the bottom of the barrel

Lets sweep it all under the carpet and only report the nice things in life. Then when some one else gets `offed` because they were never alerted to the madness that seems to be normal in some parts of the world. Well it would be their own fault for not learning about the crazier side of life. I mean if every one gos arround ignoring stuff like this. Then it will happen again and again and again. Hey buddy, looks like you are asleep. There already is censorship here as anythijg drug related cannot be posted or discussed. Asking people to not post these worthless crap stories isnt about censorship, its about not tainting this website with even more GARBAGE. If you want to discuss that crap, go to the websites like liveleak and ogrish which are designed for it. Not at a CONSPIRACY/ alternative news website. A lot of people here prefer not to be subjecy to this xrass garbage because a few fragile egos need extra stars and flags.

If the story doesn't break T&C, then the person posting said story has every right to do so. How about not reading them?

Yea because ATS was designed for alerting people about their safety from gangs and other ilk. Seriously, if you rely only on ATS to keep you safe, then you arent doing a very good job at it. Id recomend using the websites that are designed for that. Such as the state departments website.

These headlines always tell the basic gist of the story/threads. So we dont even need to read the thread to be subject to this garbage.

Yes, they are worthless stories. Human civilization has always had depravity. Everyone is aware of that.
There are plenty of websites designed specifically for this garbage. They dont need to be linked here for a few stars and flags. This isnt about ignoring them hoping they go away. But posting this crap here doesnt actually do anything to stop this crap from happening in the world. Please, show me an example where posting a crap story here on ATS has done anything useful.

Define a crap story? I could author my own Thread saying about 90% of ATS threads are rubbish and should be filtered and censored. But i don't, because i choose what i want to and don't want to read and feel that if a story doesn't break the T&C that it has every right to be posted and discussed. If you don't like the title, don't click on the thread, it really is that simple.

And you would be surprised how many people are not aware of the many awful things that go on in the world. Some stories bring awareness of that. The stories may be horrible to read sometimes, but that's life. It isn't a bed of roses.

If you and the OP are so disgusted by some stories that are posted on here, then perhaps ATS isn't the best place for you.

Well i guess im done arguing with you as youve already forgotten my first point to you. These stories show up in the recent post link where we browse recent and actively discussed threads. We dont read them. And yea there are a lot of junk stories here, but reading their headlines doesnt make our stomache curdle. If you people are so keen on discussing gore porn then go to the websites like liveleaks and ogrish that are designed for such trash.

Also, im fairly positive most people realize bad things happen in our world, especially the type of people who visit ATS. I wouldnt question their intelligence in that respect.

i'm really on the fence about this....i no longer watch any type of slasher/gore movie as i did in my teens, it just became too disgusting to me. movies like that on TV cable or at the theater do not get get my time or my money.
however, President Eisenhower after WW2 commanded a set of troops to go around and document on film and in taped recordings, hundreds of hours of the atrocities that were committed by the nazi's. paraphrasing what he said..." i do not want present or future generations to think something as horrific as this did not happen, and that it was all a lie made up by the allies". he was a student of war, but also knew too well the power of propaganda with the deception of large groups of supposedly good, sane, people being pacified by their own egos, fear, and apathy.

That is acceptable. They were documenting history and evidence for a court of law.that had a purpose. The only legit purpose people have to post garbage on ats is for stars and flags.
