Hello ALOSTSOUL,
I am only beginning my career as a mental health nurse, and I have already witnessed dilemmas such as yours many times. First, I think it is on a case by case basis really, and I personally don't think I should be the one make that call. And in the end, it's not even your doctor's call as you still have the personal choice to do it or not. However, I will say this, I have seen it function on both sides of the coin.

Delusions, hallucinations and paranoia are only subject to the amount of information one has. I've seen people dream up grandiose ideas off the National Enquirer, but I've also seen it happen with chemistry and biology textbooks, history texts, the bible is probably one of the most powerful in fact.

I've seen very highly educated people cope with schizophrenia. Part of what is so difficult with this type of client is being able to distinguish between fact and delusion, as much of it does make an awful lot of sense, but it dips into fantasy at certain points along the way. Information itself is not detrimental in and of itself, but say if you know that you are prone to delusions, paranoia, or hallucinations, you have to have a REALLY high level of scrutiny of what you observe. ATS can be harmful or helpful to this. Much of it is credible, but much of it is speculatory and often from pseudo-credible sources. The level of required scrutiny is a very high bar to set, and a very difficult fight if you choose to continue.

But ultimately, I suggest you examine really hard, and very critically, whether your time here is hurting you or not. And when I say very critically, I mean VERY. Challenge your own beliefs, examine past events, examine the answers you don't want to hear, get outside opinions from those who will be the most honest with you. In the end, your doctor sees a very limited glimpse of your life, but offers an expert outside view of something that is very challenging to your beliefs about yourself, and what ATS does to/for you. It should be very heavily considered, but in the end, you are solely responsible for doing what's healthiest and safest for yourself. And with that responsibility comes accountability for yourself. You have the answer, you just have to find it within.

Ask your GP to put you on risperidone. You should stabilize fairly quickly.

I have had similar problems, a cop told me to stop coming here. I think what he was trying to say go outside go to real life don't be typing crazy things to crazy people. Who cares what so and so says. I was in a fragile mental state and he probably believed that things would just instigate me or I shouldn't BELIEVE any of nonsense someone in a dark room is typing with no proof. I took a break and know use IPAD from my room and read a lot more than I used to do years ago and I do what I want. Hope this helped .

The conundrum... how to balance "what is fact" with "what is presented as fact".

I was 6 years old when JFK was assassinated. Within a few months, I heard my first "conspiracy theory", and was fascinated by it. At 6 years old, the idea that the government would keep secrets from Americans seemed completely plausible...

I have known things are "not as they seem" for decades. Some other things I've learned... the HARD way...

1. Knowing "the truth" does not mean my life becomes better. It just means my life map has more complexity... and sometimes that means more weight in my saddle bags. There are times, I just need to drop my saddle bags and ride through life, paying particular attention to how incredible, even in this screwed up world, having life and the capacity to see beauty, is.

2. We are like the company we keep. This has been a tough one. At first, I thought it was who I hung out with... and it CERTAINLY is that. It's a simple idea. If you take a steel nail and rub it against a magnet... the more times you rub it the more magnetized the nail becomes... and in no time, the nail is a magnet.

After giving it some thought... I realized that "the company I keep" is whatever gets my attention. Yes, who I'm around. But also what I read... my conversation. What videos, "documentaries" or Youtube I watch... everything I give my attention to is "the company I keep".

3. No matter what is going on in the world, or how scary the impending future is... life, and the world we are living in has so much that is beautiful and lovely in it, that we could never list it all out. I often don't see it, because I am fixated on TPTB and the game they are playing out. Literally how I feel is directly correlated with which "lens" I happen to be looking out of.

I have learned that helping others in the most simple ways... especially just simple kindnesses without "getting caught" have a profoundly beneficial effect on my overall well being... and they help other folks as well. How cool is that?

The truth is, that the "radio station of perception" is always broadcasting both signals. Which one I focus on is what determines how I feel. When I focus on the one that engenders gratitude... I feel GREAT.

I've also discovered that when I focus on that gratitude inducing signal, I can STILL discern truth from propaganda, and BS woven into whatever the situation is... and I can maneuver around it and not let it rob me of the wonder and gratitude I have for my life, and the beauty around me.

At a physical level... there is a bumper sticker I love... which I appreciate because of my own health choices... but it's also spot on:

"Eat Organic Food... or as your grandparents called it... FOOD".

If you are in the U.S. specifically or "the West" generally, odds are that you have been eating "industrial food" and GMO organisms for years... decades of nutrient poor foods. By definition, that means you are most likely mineral deficient, as well as lacking in Essential Fatty Acids... and a typical American.

Supplements might help... but there is no substitute for removing sweets (Sugar, corn syrup, etc...) from your diet. Even the so called "healthy sweets" eaten as a daily food item or snack, acidify the blood, and contribute to mineral deficiencies. Your blood PH must remain within a very specific range... and if you eat sweet stuff, especially if you eat too much, your body will buffer the acidity in the most effective manner it can... by pulling minerals out of your bones and tissues. Heard of Osteoporosis? Indigenous peoples get far less calcium in their diets than "civilized" folks... and have NO osteoporosis, typically.

Milk has tons of calcium... and when you drink it actually leads to calcium deficiency because the enzymes that make the calcium bio-available have been destroyed by pasteurization.

If you are able... you might look into eating something more akin to a cross between the "Paleo Diet" and a Raw Foods diet, cut out the sweets, don't go too overboard on the caffeine, and any meat/fish/poultry you eat, make sure it's pasture raised/grass fed/free range/wild.

If you decide to make changes to your diet... do it one thing at a time... start with sugar, add organic veggies and fruits to take their place. BTW... vegetable oils are pretty much poison. They were the first "immune suppresing drugs" during the first organ transplants, because they suppressed immune function so much.

Find out more about all this stuff by searching on Paleo diets, and Dr. Joe Mercola's website. Search: Mercola.

Get your bare feet on the ground regularly. Start doing some gardening outside. Get fresh air and sunshine. Go for a quiet walk in the woods with a friend who can handle the quiet of you both just taking in the sound of the woods, or at least have quiet time there. Volunteer in your community at a basic level helping the needy...

Lovingly make your new life!

Peace!

i recently went through a rather bad patch in my life, and i used conspiracy theories as an escape. I started a website a few years ago with a friend, he went a bit crazy and many an evening was ruined when he started sitting in a corner telling friends they were all being sprayed with chemtrails and the world would end in 2012, so he sort of backed out... I carried on, became disconnected from society and felt very very weird and isolated. In my mind I was starting to think i didnt fit here, found it hard to relate and was looking forward to 2012 as the aliens would come and take me away

around christmas, a 10yr relationship ended and i found myself in a very lonely place.

I was ready to end it all, panic attacks, drug dependency and a complete lack of will to carry on took over my life. I wandered into the GP and told him everything; he referred me to mental health people, however due to the crap state of the health service in the UK, the appointment was not soon enough and I really felt desperate. It was then friends and family rallied round to help me, and I realised that there is more to life than the doom and gloom you find on sites like mine, and ATS. I've closed the site now, it may come back... but with a different, less doomy spin.....

I now have a new home, life and partner (i don't hang around!
)... The love and compassion from those around me suddenly re-invigorated me. my advice to you is to go outside, find some friends and spend time "being normal". Look at your life and question if you are using ATS and other sites as a form of fantasy escapism. If the things you are reading are giving you panic attacks, stop reading them. spend some time enjoying the world and the basic things in life, get some grounding back and build yourself back up.

It's been around 4 months now since my life flipped. I still don't feel good all the time and it's quite a frightening experience to have your entire world collapse and have to re-invent yourself at this stage of my life. Running my site and reading things on ATS did nothing to help my state of mind and i've only just returned. I'll tell you one thing i've noticed.... the same old stories and doing the rounds again, not much has changed on any of them, each time people jump onboard and are convinced this that or the other is about to happen. It's a perpetual cycle of doom, and being involved in it doesn't do you any good, as you will most likely never find a firm 100% conclusion to any of the topics.

That being said, there is still a lot of interesting info here, such as the pyramids, ancient aliens theory to name two.. I wish you a speedy recovery and warn anyone else in a bad mental state to keep a check on your state of mind while reading the info posted here, it's all too easy to let yourself go a little bit bonkers....

side note: my gp was hell bent on putting me on anti depressants. I was on them briefly, never felt comfortable about it and really wanted to get through things without any chemical help. I came off them after 6 weeks, I don't believe the current drive to dumb down the emotions of the masses with pills is a good idea at all. but that's my personal opinion....

Yeah... that'll fix the problem RTYFX... prescribe anti-psychotics (sarcasm intended). There's a helluva lot of other changes ALS can make before relying on psychotropic meds as a solution. They can be helpful in an acute crisis... but they don't fix the problem.

Hey ALS,

Sorry to here about your breakdown, I hope you will feel better soon.

I just think the problem on ATS is sometimes people suffer a breakdown where reality is completely stripped away from logic and its huge factor in causing depression to some members.

I'd say 'deny ignorance' is sometimes abused, because some theories are well worth ignoring, because in the end they have no purpose but to destroy our souls.

But I'd say its cool for your GP to talk to you about things and that you are willing to talk about ATS, it just shows me that you yourself already have admited to yourself that you need a break from ATS and you don't need permission my friend.

Regards

As bekisu said earlier:
"I find it funny that your GP told you to take a break from this site and you post a thread about it on here."

I think bekisu has a good point. Your GP suggested you stop visiting ATS, and then you make a post on ATS that is now 8 pages long. Just a guess, but are you also on FaceBook?

As a totally unqualified armchair counselor, it sounds to me like Detachment Disorder. Are you substituting real-life relationships for online relationships? If so, you need to find a better balance.

Also, if you're drinking anything with Aspartame (Nutrasweet), stop. You may be one of those individuals that has severe adverse reactions to Aspartame.

When my fan is turned on to cool me down I hear voices.

That's not the spirits talking to you, that's the unavoidable end result of your brain using stochastic filtering.

The sciency word for what you're hearing is pareidolia - the misperception of hearing meaningful sound in what's essentially noise.
This. Or possibly another condition related to subtle hearing loss or tinnitus. My mother in law and I both hear these whisper voices. To us it sounds often like there is a tv or radio on in another room, though in fact there is not.

Or it may be related to social anxiety according to what I just saw on google when I was trying to find the article read long ago about hearing vague whisper sounds due to hearing damage. I have good hearing and pass all tests I've had over the years but my hearing is damaged from firing a gun once without ear protection in my youth. I got a mild form of tinnitus as a result. Have you seen a hearing specialist?

Take a look here for an alternative explanation for auditory hallucinations. www.hearinglosshelp.com...

I'm sorry if I've repeated anything that's already been posted. I had a few more pages left to read when I made this post.

I had mental breakdown. But now I surf throught all this gloomy and doomy stuff here in ATS with a Men-In-Black-like impassive reaction. I nearly know now every topics and I don't feel gloomy anymore about a possible End Of The World. I just say, well, let's prepare for it and keep searching for lies to bust.

Hi I just finished posting on a depression thread only to find your thread and thought I would share. I have suffered anxiety issues since 1991 when I left my ex husband, out of body experiences and seasonal depression. In the beginning I took my Dr. advice because I believed my doctor new what was best until one day as I sat in her office and I described symptoms to her and she reached up on the shelf above her and took down a drug book with the response let me see what we have in here that can help your symptoms.

Of course I was a changed person from that point on in regards to the medical field. I learned to listen to my body, I learned to understand that my mind is the best medication I will find. I now know that my mind can control how I feel, I made the choice to control my mind to heal my body.

I was in a grease fire in my home Sept 01 2009 and with the power of my mind my very last open hole in my skin closed in a period of 21 days from the accident. My in home nurses that came to change my bandages were amazed at my fast healing and asked me what are you doing in between our daily visits. We have never seen anyone heal so quickly from such a burn, you are LUCKY you are a fast healer to which I replied LUCK has nothing to with it, I willed myself to heal and thank GOD I've mastered it!

Best of Luck to you, remember one true fact there is no one who will ever know you better then you yourself! Learn to listen to your body, it will and does speak to you all you have to do is listen to it!

Healthy, Positive thoughts being sent your way!

Hey guys.

Just thought Id let you know I'm back and I feel great. And no drugs were needed!

I took a nice long holiday with the family around England, I forgot how beautiful this country is. I quit my job! I figured the 60hr weeks werent helping. I started sleeping better.

Voices gone! Mood swings gone! Just goes to show what a good break can do.

But....I feel a little to normal, so time to get back to the great ATS!
