Recent hurricanes Ike and Katrina may rank among the three costliest storms in U.S. history, but in preparing for disasters the federal government must think bigger still, says America's top emergency planner.Fugate told reporters Tuesday at the National Hurricane Conference in Orlando, Fla., that his agency has been preparing for realistic worst-case scenarios - not just natural disasters, such as hurricanes and earthquakes, but terrorist attacks, as well. That includes dealing with catastrophic events in which medical care would be needed for 265,000 casualties, restoring and sustaining basic services for an affected area of 7 million people within 60 days, and helping communities of 1.5 million disaster survivors recover within five years..
This is where you go wrong. These events are totally unconnected in any way, except in your own mind.
put them all together mix them up and you have what?
the head of fema is a joke with their billion dollar budget they have commercials telling you to get a go kit.. yes i will go out into the nuclear fallout with my go kit...

In other words, the head of FEMA is assuring people that he is actually doing his job, and we won't have a repeat of the Katrina fiasco. Would you prefer that the US meet every disaster unprepared?

If any of the Republican candidates get in, we're just as screwed if not more.
Especially Santorum.
Do you not see that any of these are possible to some extent and a prudent government would be providing some cautious warnings about being ready with the most basic provisions on hand. Since that is actually happening, some folks are starting to wonder why all of the fuss? Is there something that is known to happen but they can't or won't tell us about or is it merely "good advice" put out because of any of the possible reasons I've supplied above and maybe unnamed others we don't even know or dream about?

On the other hand, if you don't have a "go kit" you're going to feel like an idiot if your house is washed away in a flood. Put together a "go kit" just in case there isn't a nuclear war. Put together a "go kit."

If you live in a populated area, there will be no "going" as the roads will be jammed tight for days on weeks. If you live in an area where people will "go" to then why have a go kit?
