Ok there you are walking down the high street shopping. Then as you walk past
a bus stop a advert thats targeted at you pops up on the digital billboard.

Sounds a bit to far fetched?

Well no Google has just patented a way of using your mobile phone to find your location
then use it to place adverts for you and will even use the local weather to fine tune the ad.

Information about an environmental condition of a remote device is received, the environmental condition being determined based on a signal output from a sensor of the remote device or a sensor coupled to the remote device. An advertisement is identified based on the environmental condition, and the advertisement is provided to the remote device.

So how do Google find out the weather where you are you ask.

The user 104 may use a web browser 108 executing on a client terminal 110 (e.g., personal computer, personal digital assistant, mobile phone, media player, in-vehicle terminal) to access the search server 106 through a network 112 (e.g., Internet). One or more sensors 114 provide information about environmental conditions of the user 104. The sensors 114 can be configured to sense, for example, temperature, humidity, sound, light, and/or air composition. Sensing air composition may including sensing odors, smog, dust, pollen, pollutant, or other particles or molecules in the air. The sensors 114 can include a digital camera to obtain images of the environment. The sensors 114 can include a positioning sensor, such as a global positioning system (GPS) sensor, that provides location information. The location information can be used to access services (e.g., weather channel websites) that provide environmental conditions of a given location. Location information can also be inferred from other means. For example, the client terminal 110 can be a cell phone, and location information can be derived from information about base stations that the cell phone is connected to.

So any time you use the internet it will datamine infomation from any online device to help it
target you with adverts and it wont stop with just you location google going to listen to
the background noise too.

In some examples, an audio, image, or video signal is received from the sensor, and the environmental condition is determined based on the audio, image, or video signal. In some examples, the remote device is a mobile phone. An audio signal including a voice instruction from a user is received at the mobile phone. The environmental condition can be determined based on background sounds in the audio signal. An event can be determined based on the signal output from the sensor and location information. For example, the event can be a sports event or a musical event.

United States Patent 8138930

At this rate there will be so much infomation on us stored online we have no little
secrets left

I don't have any problem with that. I have highly specialized interests, which I battle to find related stuff in stores. Now, with Google's ads, I've found so many new stores and sites that cater for my weird interests, that I am quite happy with the Google ads. (but maybe I am just weird )

God I can't wait for capitalism, profits and monetary system to belong to an under-evolve human society of the past. Unless it is to announce a new product/company, advertisement is a total plague IMO, especially that most advertising is payed by companies that are already rich.

In my book, if someone has enough money to advertise, they don't need any more of my money.

Patents are only as valid as the peception of the publics measure of 'utility'

If and only if we could learn telepathy cell phones patents would go 'kerrplunk'..

I am the exact opposite. I hate advertising especially this new intrusive advertising like they have been using on the internet. How long until you walk by a sign in public and it changes to a viagra ad or something tailored for you? How long until you actually have to buy the product until they stop doing it? I think advertising offends our freedom of thought.

Also, it blows my mind why people accept advertising on services we pay for; such as cable/satellite television. If you pay a monthly fee... why commercials? It is basically a company pocketing money in return for providing less of a service, it's stupid.

Advertising is nothing more than a way of forcing something into popular culture skipping the whole issue of if people like it or not. In a truly free market, when something is desired people will make it. If something cannot exist without shoving BS down people's throats, it shouldn't exist at all.

What a stupid, smart ass remark. Just what kind of advertising do you think we are talking about here?

Troll.

I feel very sorry for all the kinky seniors that get ads for butt plugs following them around when they are with their grandchildren.

That actually doesn't bother me to much. In fact I hate shopping... What DOES bother me is Google sending cookings up my address every time I go on line, even though I use the "NO COOKIES"! option. Didn't do squat. So... I send cookies to those who send me cookies, seems only fair, I was taught to share. My cookies are evaporative and untraceable, as well as harmless. But I can see just who is doing what.

By the way I don't have a problem if I get cookies as long as I permit them. Found out Google was a bit spooked when I told them about this toy of mine. So far the track, backtrack scan and ID feature I developed uses some exotic math, and is still quite invisible. Good. I love to make the pricks who violate my privacy sweat.

Not entirely surprising. Today I wanted to read a news article on a site but I had to log in using facebook.. I thought ... ok .. what ever.. so I click log in and it says it wants:

Friends list
Birthday
Likes
mail address
Address
Phone number
The ability to post "as me" on my own wall

*sigh*

this society sucks.

With respect, you are missing the point about the panopticon. They will use your own interests against you. It is about corporations and governments exercising totalitarian control.

We need to stop spending and contributing to the consumer economy, come what may, before it is too late or until they stop this kind of nonsense and allow for a consumer economy that is ecologically sustainable and does not seek to domesticate the humans!
