A student who admitted posting racially offensive comments on Twitter about footballer Fabrice Muamba has been jailed for 56 days. Swansea University student Liam Stacey, 21, from Pontypridd, admitted inciting racial hatred over remarks about the Bolton Wanderers player, who collapsed during a FA Cup tie at Tottenham. A district judge in Swansea called the comments "vile and abhorrent". Muamba, 23, who suffered a cardiac arrest, is still in intensive care. District Judge John Charles, sentencing Stacey at Swansea magistrates, him: "In my view, there is no alternative to an immediate prison sentence. "It was not the football world who was praying for [Muamba].... everybody was praying for his life." Fabrice Muamba, 23, remains critically ill after collapsing during a match on 17 March Stacey broke down in tears as he was led away to begin his jail term.
'Disciplinary' Stacey tried to "distance himself" from the tweets by claiming his account had been hacked, the court was told. He later tried to delete his page but was arrested the following day at his student house in Swansea. When interviewed by police, Stacey said he had been drinking since lunchtime on Saturday and was drunk when he made the comments. Stacey was initially released on bail pending sentence and was ordered not to use Twitter and other social networking sites. A Swansea University spokesperson said: "The student remains suspended from the university pending the conclusion of our disciplinary proceedings." Stacey is also registered as a player with Treorchy rugby club, where he has turned out for the second team on occasions. A statement after his arrest said: "The club wishes to completely disassociate itself from these comments and will be carrying out a full investigation into this matter." Muamba remains in intensive care in a London hospital where his condition is described as serious but stable.
Should this man go to jail for racial comments he made on twitter ?

Freedom of speech is not freedom to hate.

My question in reply... Why not?
A young 23 year old athlete collapsed during a game and actually died for around 2 hours after a cardiac arrest. He somehow was brought back to life and is still struggling to stay alive to this day. During all of this some moron decides to use twitter and abuse him racially.. Why on earth should the abuser not face punishment for his idiotic behavior? Racism is racism, no matter where you do it and it's always wrong and should always face punishment, in my opinion.
It doesn't matter if he's on the streets shouting his nonsense or in the comfort of his bedroom.. he should grow up, learn to live in this century and stop saying stupid stuff about another human being simply because of their skin colour. Or anything else like that for the record. This is 2012 for goodness sake, we should be moving past all that crap already.
This man was jailed for his racism.. I say good. Well done to those responsible for jailing him.
Just my opinion of course and I'm sure I'll get flamed but honestly, I don't see why these kind of questions continue to come up. Why should someone be allowed to say something on the internet where what they're saying is going to reach many people and yet not be allowed to say the same thing on the street where it's also going to reach people? It doesn't make sense to me.edit on 27-3-2012 by Rising Against because: (no reason given)
People Die all the time what makes this case so special ? Why should the MSM hype this as a national tragedy.
we are letting the police state take control because we let them. This man been jailed is another step to totalitarianism

People Die all the time
So. Does that mean they should be abused racially and the abusers be allowed to get away with it. No, of course not, that would be utter madness.
What's your point here? Because it happens all the time it's all of a sudden ok?..
we are letting the police state take control because we let them. This man been jailed is another step to totalitarianism
You can dress it up however you want, it doesn't matter really. A racist man is facing punishment for his racist comments today.. well done to those who made it happen in my opinion. There should be no place in our world for such hatred, especially in light of such a horrendous incident, it's not needed nor is it ever wanted.

A Horrendous incident ? He had a heart attack ( In total, 146000 people have a heart attack every year and 94000 of them die. ... 179 people lose one of their parents every day to a fatal heart attack)
I would hardly call it a horrendous incident.
My point is that due to him been a footballer the man has been jailed for racial comments. If he was not a footballer and just a average joe would the man have been jailed ?
