Then again... must be pretty creepy to hit the "almost exact" date thou ?
...

Actually, In a update, the Earthquake was rated 7.2.

Although we don't know how the prediction was determined... it does appear that the Original Poster was successful with their broad blanket statement...regardless here's my "thumbs up" to you..

In other news, I'm predicting that the sun will set later today!

Can't really call it a prediction, and I hope I get 18 stars too....

I'm predicting you will not get 18 stars
you're not exactly correct with the 17%.

Everyone is missing the fact that OP said will get a 7.2 EQ, check the title, and not 7+ What are the chances of predicting a 7.2 EQ and one actually happening, not 17% ? Some sources say 7.1 others say 7.2, quakes.globalincidentmap.com...

Looking at it he says 7.2+, so he did not predict a 7.2 just that 7.2 would be the lowest....

Somebody was right, maybe this will shut the people up trying to be naysayers. These things should be taken more seriously.

It's all a numbers game and in this case he had close to a 20% chance that somewhere in the WORLD a large earthquake would happen. Now if he said Chile too and could do it a few more times with the next big quakes then I would believe something is more going on here. They are now saying it was a 7.1...does that mean he missed his mark of a 7.2+, or do you all say "well that close enough".

There is also another numbers game going on here. With the sheer volume of predictions on ATS the odds are someone would at least come close...finally...

EMSC using all reports from worldwide station, and is best because they use mix M from all station ..

Wrong:

EMSC collects real time parametric data (source parmaters and phase pickings) provided by 65 seismological networks of the Euro-Med region.

EMSC source

Here is image and link to search, only put M 7.2 and press get event ..

I post M 7.2 +, so result is 7 earthquakes in last year or 12 months ..

And one more thing year 2011 was very seizmic active because Japanese EQ of M 9.0 ..

You can lie both off you or manipulate on someone else threads, or post some members reports or fabricate original posted magnitude etc etc ..

This is only facts, so your words not worth anything ..

Ok, giving you the "7.2" specific minimum magnitude, there were four magnitude 7.2+ quakes in the last six months.

The fact is that there are networks other than EMSC that record earthquakes which are not listed at EMSC, and in case you have trouble with simple math, six months ago was October. No manipulation necessary

Magnitude Mw 7.1
Region MAULE, CHILE
Date time 2012-03-25 22:37:01.0 UTC
Location 35.18 S ; 72.06 W
Depth 1 km
Distances 231 km SW Santiago (pop 4,837,295 ; local time 18:37:01.7 2012-03-25)
45 km NW Talca (pop 197,479 ; local time 18:37:01.7 2012-03-25)
37 km NE Constitución (pop 37,917 ; local time 18:37:01.7 2012-03-25)

EMSC source

A 7.2 is about 1.26 bigger in amplitude and releases about 1.41 times the energy of a 7.1, though with the various scales used (there are several), differences amount to little to the people who experience them.

Possible location area West Cost-Alaska-Central America, Japan-PNG-Fiji, Turkey or somewhere from 30-40 parallel north ..

Think very possible will hit in next 28 hours but time-period limit is 28 March ..

Again, wrong hemisphere entirely.

An earthquake prediction is a prediction that an earthquake of a specific magnitude will occur in a particular place at a particular time (or ranges thereof).

Congratulations OP.

Stars and flags for you.

There is one detail that makes this prediction even more amazing: this quake happened less than one week after the quake in Mexico.

As you all should know, it's very rare that two quakes with magnitude equal or higher than 7.0 happen in the same week, unless the quakes are "aftershocks" of a much bigger quake, like the 9.0 in Japan last year.

So, the prediction made by OP for a time window of 4 days was even more "unlikely" to come true when it was made, because of the quake in Mexico a few days ago.

But it came true!!

I may have expressed myself not very well when I said "unless they are aftershocks of a much bigger quake". I should have said: unless they are part of a same "seismic unrest" in a same area, and both are caused by friction of the same tectonic plates.

7.0 Mw, 2011/1/1 6:56:59, -26.758, -63.103, 583.6, Santiago del Estero, Argentina, usgs, neic
7.2 Mw, 2011/1/2 20:20:17, -38.362, -75.032, 32, Tirua, Araucania, Chile, emsc, emsc (1)

The two quakes above are probably related, since Santiago del Estero and Tirua are not very distant from each other, both are close to the Andes.

So, the two quakes above are much likely related to each other, and happened as part of the same "seismic unrest".

The same thing applies to those two bellow:

7.2 Mw, 2011/8/20 16:55:2, -18.26, 168.069, 40.6, SW of Efate, Vanuatu, usgs, neic
7.1 Ms, 2011/8/20 18:19:24, -18.287, 168.132, 28.5, SW of Efate, Vanuatu, ras, ras

Both are part of the same "seismic unrest".

PS: Your list of quakes above 7.0 in 2011 seems to be incomplete... What happened to the quake in Fiji on September 15???

Not my list, merely referencing it.

You do seem to be correct on that count, though:

This event would fall between these two:

7.6 Ms, 2011/10/21 17:57:16, -29.2, -175.5, 16, Kermadec Trench, geonet

I will point this out to muzzy, I don't he would not mind being informed of an error in his listings as his goal is as complete a listing as is possible given the vagaries of the science of seismology.

(+ 4 days)

2010 12 25 131637 -19.70 167.95 16 7.3 MwUCMT 4FM .......

As you can see, 2010 had a lot of quakes above 7.0 and there are 20 INTERVALS to analyse.

Out of the 20 intervals, only 7 were intervals of 8 days or less. 13 intervals were of 9 days or more.

Now, check the pattern for 2009:

2009 01 03 194350.65 -0.41 132.88 17 7.7 MwGCMT 6CM .T..... (swarm, check coordinates)

As you can see, 2009 has 13 INTERVALS to be analyzed

Out of the 13 intervals, only 4 were intervals of 8 days or less. 9 intervals were of 9 days or more.

So, normally, intervals of 8 days or less between earthquakes with magnitude of 7.0 or higher, that are not related to each other, are rare.

That makes the prediction of the OP even more unlikely to come true.

I just wanted to revisit this thread and say well done. I had comment earlier saying:

"Noted, will be watching."

I was, and it did. I'm not here to dispute the method or anything else, just that was a relatively successful prediction!

So, again well done.

Personally most dangerous time for very strong earthquake of M 7.5 + or M 8.0 + will be from 10 April to June 12, 2012 ..

To be more more precise from 20 April to 08 June, but others days in that time line are dangerous also ..

Very positive we will have strong seizmic activity worldwide in that days also volcanic activity, first days in May ..
Also big possibility for some "unusual" events ..

We will have super full moon at May 6 2012 ..

Last one was at 19. March 2011 of 356577 distance but we also have extreme solar activity from March 6 to March 11 .. Most dangerous location will be area of USA-West Coast, Japan to Indonesia, PNG to Fiji, Alaska, from Iran to Italy and of course all area of "Ring of Fire" ..

Possibility to have stronger earthquake in all of this areas, mostly ..

I was predicted that before two months, like many others stronger one ..

Possible location and dangerous places ..

Think USA will have strong seizmic activity and big earthquake in this time, probably in ocean OFF cost OREGON-N Ca, CA and Portland-Seattle are dangerous area too ..
